The first complete tool out of my yard. I saw a little pink spot in the dirt and was thinking flake until I felt that resistance under the dirt. My first thought was a busted drill then after rubbing the dirt away I was thinking scraper but With the complete tip I’m wondering could it be a graver type tool or even a preform? Also I’ve not seen this material before, if anybody recognizes it let me know. Found in se Kansas and most things I find in that spot are early archaic.

I'm guessing the big end of that was the working end. Looks like pretty good wear on it too. Likely headed in a wood or bone handle and used to work wood or dress leather. Cool little tool.

Another thing that makes me think it was hafted from the pointed end is the color change on that pointed end. Often an artifact that lay in the ground hafted on a bone handle will patinate over the artifacts but be protected inside the haft. Eventually the bone may deteriorate but the difference in patina remains. This looks to be the case with your scraper.

I may have a few holes off in the corner haha. After reading another thread Ill try to avoid personal attacks (not taking a side) and say I’ve had fun taking a trowel and scraping off layer by layer I’ve wanted to get a good in situ picture of a point but I can’t cover much ground digging that way so I have to cross my fingers and hope I’ve chose a spot next to a point.

Still walk my yard after a good rain and it’s usually good for a handful of flakes and the rare stone tool, like I said this was the first complete one.

Gar scale, I’ve never thought of a point being weathered differently, it’s very possible the soil around here is very hard on wood and bone so I’m sure any handle would be long gone. Thanks for the insight

I’ve collected a ton of flakes and that’s a material I’ve never seen before, kind of salmon with little black flecks. It’s clearly good stuff I really like the flaking on it

You definitely identified some other pieces I’ve found.

It’s hard to say from pictures, you may be right on this one. I’d have to see some in person to feel good about it. I have a tendency to subdivide rocks that end up being different parts of the same rock.

it’s hard to describe but I’ll try, It looks like Kay county has a satin finish and this has a kind of clear finish where you can see a bit of depth but it’s not translucent.

Maybe this one with the flash will help.

That’s a cool find for sure.

I see a possible hafted scraper, but usually the bit end has more of taper to it. The color/aging difference on the artifact (Garscale) is an interesting study observation to consider too

Another possibility is an Ovoid Projectile Point, of which there are many variations all over the country.

I considered Ovid projectile but in the first pics it appears the pointed end is curved and has the bulb of percussion left on there. That would make it ineffective as a projectile. Also nite edge wear on the rounded end.

I have seen the difference in color many times in artifacts hafted in bone. Any time one is dug with bone crumbling away the patina difference us noticeable where it was once protected. Classic example here.

You got a good eye it does kick in one direction, the angle on these pics make it seem more extreme but it’s there.

I think through sheer dumb luck I found it, from this site nonetheless.

It seems a bit absurd to think this really came from 1,300 miles away in Oregon but you can’t tell me that top point doesn’t look like the exact same stuff.
