I thought up a time saving tip when digging in "Trashy Areas".
I bought for $10.00 a long pole with attached 5 inch magnet(circular), at Home Depot,( I think you can also find one at "Lowes" & ACE hardware.) I originally used mine for picking up Galv/Lath nails and wire when I was Contracting and clean-up the work area.
I tryed this magnet on my MD targets (I dig all Targets!), I found when I took my "Med Size Mattock" and broke up the dirt I would rub the magnet thru the dirt and it would pick up the many nails, wire and iorn pieces, the best part many times it saved me from bending over or crouching a lot. Then I double check over with my MD, cover the hole & then on to another target. What I also like is that it saves me from getting on my knees and sifting at times with some hard ground & light frost we have here now, but that does not stop me. (In my oppinion Metal Detecting is like hitting on a brick wall... It's bound to give!)
I have my MD set on Nickle on "All Metal & Disc". I know sometimes I do get some Brass shell casing and Alum Pull tabs & Foil when My MD Still picks after I use my magnet but it could be a coin, ring or gold or what ever. You never know what you may find, thats whats makes it exciting. Happy MD hunting everybody. This works for me, hope for you too. D. from California
