Hello everyone. I've found a carved head down in our stream a few years ago. I'd been trying to dig out a piece of jasper and this was crusted onto the top. Any ideas? I'm in the Willamette Valley in Oregon DSC_0007.JPG DSC_0002 (3).JPG DSC_0002.JPG

Hey Logan, welcome to T-net! I'm up the road from you in Yacolt WA.

Better chance of IDing items if a size and possible material is included in the query. Also both sides pictured.

That is a trippy looking find!

Better? I don't have any from the side, top or bottom. I think it's soapstone??. Just shy of 2" tall. It does appear the knot on top used to have more to it. And the flat piece at the forehead is unfinished. What else did I miss telling you?

Natural stone, it is a case of pareidolia, just like the examples below, all are natural.

Medical Definition of pareidolia : the tendency to perceive a specific, often meaningful, image in a random or ambiguous visual pattern The human brain is optimized to recognize faces, which could also explain why we are so good at picking out meaningful shapes in random patterns.

: the tendency to perceive a specific, often meaningful image in a random or ambiguous visual patternThe scientific explanation for some people is pareidolia, or the human ability to see shapes or make pictures out of randomness. Think of the Rorschach inkblot test.

So you're saying this is natural? Even with all the facial/hair detail and each carving mark being clearly visible? OK then

Yes natural, the "facial hair" detail is still part of the pareidolia.

I guess I’m the minority on this one seems too deliberate in the pattern and there doesn’t appear to be any extra areas that don’t fit, the entire piece fits into the head carving. At the least I wouldn’t toss it.

boy howdy, this one needs a scope and an expert...I can go either way on it. On the one hand it seems pretty clearly a face, on the other hand the Willamette (or anywhere else) doesn't have any examples to reference.
