It all started with the fact tat I woke up at 3am and felt the urge of going on a hunt before work. So I went down to my beach. After a whole lot of coins the time went by and I was ready to go back home to et ready for work. So i decided to start walking with a big sweep,...so if i hit anything (hardly a chance, right?) I could dig some more on the way. The I had a weird signal. short one way and real long the other. I almost didn't dig it because I was sure it was another bolt. I dug it and it was.............. good thing i checked the hole again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I found a beautiful 18K Sapphire Ring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does anybody have any experience with the Hallmarks? As far as I can tell it's 18K from the Birmingham area. Is that right? Wow what a morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, your hallmark assumptions appear to be correct. This ring is 18K, assayed in the Birmingham office (England, not Alabama). The lowercase "a" is a special mark that was put on all works made in the year 2000. It's only seven years old, but nonetheless it is a beautiful ring and I congratulate you on your find!

How did you find out Eupho 17?

I was mearly quoting a source... 2000 could prolly be it. The small "a" may have been used in 1900 as well... but the quality and looks of your ring makes me thing the letter has been recycled.

I think you can condider that it's 2000...

or - Take it to a pro... heck, your going to want to get it appraised anyway, right? Or not... :)

Oh yea... I forgot to congratulate you on your next 5 million pulltabs, because 1 gold ring makes you start diggin the pulltabs with abandon!

Re: Found my first real treasure!!!!!!!!!!!! Yepeeehhhhhhh

As others have said the anchor is the mark of the Birmingham assay office. Many rings will also have a makers mark as well (this one doesn't that we can see anyway).
The older rings were usally marked with 750 for 18ct gold rather than 18.
The lower case ( a ) was used by many different English cities over a few hundred years but the difference is always the box that surrounds the letter. Some are square, some are square with the corners off, some are circles, shields etc.
The one for Birmingham 1900 has a square top (with corners missing) and then a } at the bottom. The one you have is actually square with the corners missing. It could well be a new one as my book doesn't go up to the year 2000.

All that aside though, HOLY CRAP, what an awesome find :o :o
Well done and thanks for posting.

Re: Found my first real treasure!!!!!!!!!!!! Yepeeehhhhhhh

Wow thats a beauty. The ring is definately assyed in Birmingham and is 18kt gold.As for all the date opinions I believe 1900 is accurate. The lower case A was used in Birmingham in 1900 - 1875 and 1798.The shield shape can not always be trusted especially the first year of its change. In 1900 the shield does change to square on top and points on the bottom but in 1899 it was a square shield. This was common for hallmarks to use that last shield design as long as the right letter style was used. Not only that but they are old cut stones which was the way it was done back then.So it cant be 2000.
So you have a fabulous 18kt diamond sapphire ring from 1900.Excellent
The other thing to note is early stones are usually far better quality and worth more then modern stones of equal size.My wife is a certified goldsmith and I have been selling antique jewellery for over 26 years, its the real deal.
