Not sure actually. I'm a newbie and learning as I go . If you can educate me on it that would be cool.

Float if you found it. Vein if you broke it off the vein. Mineralized quartz.

In some parts of Arizona gold is found in purple quartz. Remember gold is a metal. Does that yellow stuff look metallic? It doesn't to me but it can be hard to see clearly from a photo. With that said it still could have very fine gold in it. Crush it up.

Chris, you might want to do some research...as in reading books and mining reports and online stuff.A good start would be to get the book Handbook for Prospectors by Richard Pearl or older editions by VonBernewitz.been in print about 90 years.available widely on the internet at different prices or borrow it from a big library or university library.another old time book is How to find gold by Ion Idreiss a great Australian prospector and writer.Chris Ralph(Reno Chris) who writes for the mining journal has out a good book and he posts on most of the major gold forums.Your doing the field work so you've got a head start.Everyone starts somewhere, good luck

What you learn from the books and other people you automatically apply in the field after awhile. These are not things one learns in a day,a week or month.one is forever learning this kind of stuff.Obviously the most important thing is to persist and never give up.There's also lot's of free online stuff available through Google books and other sites. In hard rock mining the number one thing is always safety first.when in doubt,DON'T.All your basic tools are inexpensive and the competition is minimal in this kind of prospecting. The object is not to find and make a gold mine, but to find nice quartz gold species and an occasional pocket of gold.....http://www.goldplacer.com/hardrockgold.htm...this is a quickly written paper I wrote for a fellow years ago upon request. It's a little more involved than it seems but it's a good place to start...click the link and look under lode gold prospecting.
