Ok, why is this a "holy grail" coin?

Wouldn't that be a 1794 draped bust half dollar?

I do have a 1987 half dollar but need the 1987 D. You know what else? After today I will be pretty close to having a complete collection of S mint Kennedys. Its looking good.

Yeah...I'm lost as well. I was expecting to see some half from the 1800s or something. What's special about a 1970 D?

That is a great find.
Way to go!
I know what you mean. Its something you might expect to find because its a fairly modern coin but a scarce date.
You wouldn't normally expect to find a Barber or Seated half in circulation, but I'm sure it has been done.

Update, I have also found 27 - 40% kennedys, 6 - 90% silver kennedys, a 1962 Franklin, a 1956 Franklin that looks to be in uncirculated condition, 1969 S silver kennedy, 1992 S clad kennedy , 1994 S silver kennedy, 1996 S clad Kennedy, 1998 S clad Kennedy, and a 2003 S clad kennedy. And sorry about building expectations folks, but people experienced in coin roll hunting for halves know that the 1970 D was not put in circulation and is hard to find. In my Whitman coin folder, there is a spot for it but even the Whitman people left the cardboard circle in the spot because they don't expect most people to find one.

Now, the only thing I need to complete my collection of Kennedy half dollars is the 1987 D. Otherwise I have all the other dates and mints.

They were only issued in mint sets. No 1987 halves were released for circulation. If you find one, it's a real oddity.
