I went to a yard sale yesterday morn on my way to work , I bought a few garden tools and a poultry waterer - I saw this big wooden thing - they had $25.00 on it . I did not buy it even though I was tempted . In the afternoon I noticed they had a big free pile of stuff that didn't sell , including this - so I grabbed it . I think it's a foundry mold of some sort .

I'm having a hard time figuring out if it would make a wheel or a gear. I guess there would be another piece.

Reminds me of some type of gear also. That would make one big and heavy cog if it was for metal. Maybe made for a windmill or gristmill type of use.

Who cares what it is - it looks cool. Now, what in the world are you going to do with it? :) Thanks for sharing...

Cool find.

I think that it is technically called a wood pattern used for making cast molds.

Interesting, yet worthless, trivia: Molten iron, when cast, shrinks as it cools by 10% in all directions. Pattern makers must account for the shrinkage when making patterns.
