Went down to the farm Saturday to poke around and the corn was 10' high. On my way out I saw that the neighbors pear trees were full and stopped to have a few. He hollered and said come inside you have to see this. He said that he had been working on his water lines that come out of a little cave in the mountain to his cattle troughs. Said he got a flash light and climbed into the back of the cave were they have a little wall built to capture then siphon the water out. He fixed the hose that had come loose and turned around to come out. Over against the side wall he saw two rocks side by side sitting on a slab of rock he had never paid any attention to.
This is what they were. Two beautiful celts side by side. Just sitting waiting to be discovered. He was one happy guy. We hunts his fields and I have found some pretty neat things there over the years. He was so proud.
The one on the left shows the pecking towards the back of the celt and no polish. The bits were perfect. Good size as I used my feet for size reference in the photos. Took with a cell phone unfortunately. I am guessing they are what is called a pole celt?
Anyways thought I would share his finds and fun story.

Yep. I just thought how cool to be sitting in that cave for who knows how many years waiting to be discovered. Why would they leave them in there?

I was saying pole celts. Does that sound right or is that a local terminology? Thanks

I've not heard "pole celt".. the back or "poll" end opposite the bit is what shows "pecking" on them.
I see damage so often and many times squarely on the back that I think some of it may be from striking the poll end with a stone while in use to dislodge it or help it through wood or even during hafting.Nice use Polish on those too.
Nice ones!

We've gone through this one in the past. I'm still not sure which is correct. A poll, I've always thought was an opposite, yet usable tool, opposing the blade of an axe. The use of the poll end of a Celt would knock it out of its haft. "Poll Celt" may just be an old timer lingo that we gathered in time. Not sure?

A celt is just an ungrooved axe.
How many types do you think there are?
The poll end is more pointed on some..Mabey that's where the collectors term came from.
