Went door knocking and got permission at a house built in the 1790's. The land has been totally reworked over the years, so I didn't find much. However the last target of the day was a George Washington Inaugural Button! My question: the button is sort of scalloped around the edge. Is this from being beat up in the ground for 200 years, or do you think it was done intentionally?

Thanks,
Jim

Really nice find. I believe the way the button looks is from being beat up in the ground. I'm no expert, but just my 2 cents worth.

OH man! That is a GREAT find in any condition! The button may be a bit wrinkled but the design is pretty crisp. Congrats! May have to have it up with the BANNER finds!

Awesome button. I have only dug about 25 flat buttons, only a few of which were colonial. For what it is worth, none of mine were shaped like that one despite spending 150+ years in harsh New England soil. Congrats on the exceptional find!

Almost looks like someone was trying to be a little creative with the bends, after they had the button? AWESOME find BTW! :icon_thumright:

Congrats on an awesome and very historic button. My guess is that at one time your button was very close to a fire and got very hot which led to the waviness. Other than that, perhaps it got stepped on by oxen after being lost. I don't think roots would cause all of that waviness. It could have been done intentionally by someone playing with it but I think the heat theory or the oxen theory is more likely.

if you have a few extra bucks - you might want to have straightened by a professional
as is my guess is it may bring $2000 or around there - so many are being found lately
I dont know how the market is on them

That is an incredible find! I'd go with the stepped on by oxen theory but who knows. Besides the waves that thing is in really nice condition from the looks of it. It seams like a good amount of these come out of the ground closer to wasted copper coins but yours look solid with great detail intact! I'll give it a banner vote! I would die to find one of these!

Any Washington inaugural button is a fantastic find. Your did have a hard time of it, but you do have an intact shank. I agree it probably got beat up in the ground over time. A lot can happen in 200 years. Even beat up it has great detail. You have my banner vote. Keep swingin.
