Found it at a homesite today that had a good mix of targets. Definitely not period but I'd say early 1900s. Any idea?

Is that a wick sticking out of it? If so it might be a "trench lighter" used in WWI for lighting cigarettes and not drawing the 1A1trench.jpg attention of a sniper. ???

I think it's just a midget lighter missing the cover. Trench lighters didn't produce a flame. Midget lighters do.

Trench lighters do make a flame, ideally you kept the wick short so the flame wouldn't be too large and make a good target for a sniper. I agree though that the one here is a civilian type lighter though.
