Contraband gold finger bars existed through most of the Spanish colonial period, but probably not at the start. They are more likely to have occured after the conquest of Peru. They appear to have been broken up and used along with other official gold bits as oro "corriente." The metal content could probably determine if a bar was manufactured during this period, or is a later fabrication. Location and provenance is everything.

I think it plays to the mystery of the wide span in coin dates. Unmarked bars, dates from 1720 or so to 1802. You have a real mystery. I'll be first in line for tickets when the movie comes out

They already made this movie. It's called "Into the Blue". Just stay out of that plane and you'll be fine!

All I can say BVI is keep it up. I can't wait to see the whole story on the history channel soon on your amazing finds. I just hope the ending is not that Spain is trying to claim it as theirs.

side note BVI hunter.. do not clean the bars if they have coral encrustation on them. they will be worth 10 times the value if associated to under water bars recovered with the coral still on them as compared to shinny clean bars only worth the smelt value.

BVI Hunter:

Are you familiar with
SPANISH TREASURE BARS
From New World Shipwrecks
by Alan K. Craig & Ernest J. Richards, Jr.

?

There's also a couple of publications by Douglas Armstrong (I hope I got that name correct!) on Spanish "treasure bars."
