I am new to detecting and found this rock with the detector it registers around a 40 on my gold bug. I have broken off some chunks and they register around a 5 to a 10, and other pieces hit around the 40 mark and from what I have read I didn't think iron pyrite would register up to a 40. I took a chunk into a jeweler and he said that there is not a piece of gold in it, but when I soaked it in muriatic acid for a couple of weeks attached is what I have. Is this more pyrite or did I find the gold hidden in the pyrite?

Looks pyrtic to me, could be gold locked in sullfides, would need to be crushed and leached to recover. Kinda costly process for a small amount of ore. JMHO

Yes,

If you crush and pan, if it's free-milling gold, it will be easy to separate and identify. The gold will flatten out (in small flakes or larger pieces) or stay formed in lumps if any of it's bigger, and it won't shatter or crush to a powder like pyrite will.

All the best,

Lanny
