You might have run across one of the gold plated ones they sell on one of the shopping networks. I found a gold plated Susan B. dollar not long ago.

I've got a couple of 24k plated quarters. Came from a guy demo ing a gold & silver plating system as a work from home business. Could possibly be someones demo coin.

correct, companies buy the coins uncirculated, plate them in gold and mark them up big time
Very similar to these groups painting the silver eagles, and sell them at rediculas prices.
also, always watch out for the freight mark up when buying this stuff
this is usually where they grab you
