I'm here down the street again, Happy Thanksgiving!
Let's go mining! We came in yesterday and surprised mom :evil6: haha

Hey Reed...
I was thinking of getting out and taking a look at the beach north of us... I'll give you a call a little later today.

Well after I was able to move from stuffing myself at Christmas dinner I went up to my little beach to take a look.
We have had some weather but not enough to really start consolidating the sands yet. There is a fair bit of skim but no thick layers of black sand, and we haven't really had much rain so the creek is down considerably.

Digging that cobble is a real pain in the behind..... If the beach were richer I would consider it but that beach just hasn't shown enough color to make the extra work worth it.
It would be better if we could run power also and use a hi banker but since that isn't possible .....just not worth the effort.

Hey Johnedoe, have followed your posts and find prospecting on the beach to be really fascinating. Its amazing how much gold is moved around in the tidal areas and deposited on the beaches. What is the size range of gold that you find? Curious as to just how large (seems strange thinking of +50 as large!) the gold is that gets deposited onshore. Enjoying your posts and look forward to when the conditions are good for your to run...

Depending on which beach I go to I can be getting anything from +80 to -200 ...

Most of the gold I get from the beach I frequent runs through a -100 mesh screen like water.... with some at -200.

Thanks, I was guessing that the "larger" size gold was in that range. I found some information describing how placer gold on beaches is deposited by longshore drift from a nearby river, which is the source of the gold. Pretty interesting... Best of luck with your beach prospecting in 2018!

Care to share the information you found?
If you look at tidal and current charts you can get an idea of the flow of things also. Those charts explain Cape disappointment deposits pretty well.
I have still been wondering about the south side of the Columbia and deposits there.
As you know Oregon doesn't allow ANY motors on the beach......:BangHead:.... stupid rule.

Wildminer shared this site... pretty cool site.

Well I finally got out a little this last weekend and manage to move a little sand... The beach still isn't ready, there was a couple feet ov overburden before I got into the fine gravel layer. did this in about 2 1/2 hours.
I will weigh it when it dries but I am guessing approx. 2.5 grain.... only 12.84 grain to go for the first gram of the year....:laughing7:... I'll try not to spend it all in one place.

Well it finally dried out and I was a bit optimistic....
It was only 1.86 grain.....
I guess I will have to cancel my reservations to the islands this month...:laughing7:

Amazing cause it looks like 1/2 gram in the pan. That sure is some paper thin stuff. Still looks purdy though. There are probably 100's of ounces below your feet too bad you can use any real equipment to get it.. i know the feeling..ugh..sigh

Johnedoe,
Here are three of the sites/docs that I found on placer gold on beaches. Thought they were pretty interesting to read... Enjoy.

1. https://www.icmj.com/magazine/print-article/bering-sea-gold-part-ii-1985/

2. Beach Placers of the Oregon Coast (Interesting PDF of 1934 report by USGS director Mendenhall: https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1934/0008/report.pdf

3. https://www.icmj.com/magazine/article/beach-mining-for-gold-800/

Let me know what you think of these...

We just had a heck of a storm .... Really rearranged the beaches... I may try to get out a bit this weekend... will see how the weather is and how I feel, pulled a muscle in my back a couple days ago.... sucks gettin old.
The surf washed a guy of the rocks up north of me a few miles and a number of the beaches have been closed due to the flotsam that has been washing up with the large surf...

So much for getting to the beach..... The weather persisted and the tides were unfavorable... You just don't work a beach with the incoming tide... especialy when that beach gets real skinny on the high tide anyway....

Also I haven't seen driftwood up this high in a while....

Wow! I heard there were 50' to 60' swells yesterday, and another idiot walked down on the beach to see them up close... I can't believe how many people lose their lives there...

I finally got up to cape disappointment this weekend.... Unfortunately the trip was for business and I had no time for the good stuff also the weather really sucked and is getting worse.
I am definitely going to have to make time to get up there and work that beach...... Here are some pics that serve to make me feel even worse about not being able to work the beach.
