Grandfather's name on badge ??? What is this?

Found my grandfather's name on a badge of some sort dug in a field by the old homesite. My grandfather died 25 years ago at the age of 100! On the front is J.A.Duncan (my grandfather), Boston, Georgia. On the back I cannot figure out what it is. A four letter word in blue with 'wings' near it. What is this? badge1.JPG badge2.JPG

Thanks for responding Nitric, my grandpa was a painter / carpenter all his life. I agree the wings look similar to what you said. I noticed a few words just under the wings (hard to tell) spelled " D I S A . . . . . . ????" I wonder if it say's 'disabled'......

Good idea! I wonder from the (2) holes on the side if it was some sort of posting on maybe a fence post. Like a electric company marking....

I'm thinking it's some type of ID tag for a steamer trunk or some type of possession container, and the tag was mounted on the item for identification.

The blue wings and words on the back are probably from the company who made the tag. I don't think the logo/words on the back have anything to do 'personally' with your Grandfather since the tag has 2 mounting holes, thus the back would not be seen.

For example, if your Grandfather was in the Military, he could have had a trunk for his things, and the wing s logo could have represented the manufacturer or a symbol for the branch of service. Another idea/example would be a truck for a vehicle. Since your Granddad was born around the turn of the century, his car could have had a ID tag for the steamer type trunk, and the logo on the back represented the car company.

I think there are quite a few possibilities, and identifying the logo on the back could be your best clue.

Neat find :)

was he into trapping ?

If you can find out his Hobbies,
it may give more ideas

I agree the fact it has 2 holes says it's an ID tag off something
leather, wood or metal
it was nailed, bolted, screwed or Riveted to &
the Back just happens to be where he originally got the tag.

Looking closer at the pic I see "DISABL " no luck yet finding a pic of any old logo.

I think Sodabottlebob is correct. That was going to be my answer as well. Nice find especially since it belonged to a loved one.

I believe what is on the back is a "winged wheel" company or group logo... I looked at a bunch with no luck yet.

I should probably wait for confirmation on the name, but because I can't image there being more than one J A Duncan from Boston, Georgia, I decided to go ahead and share this. It's a 1917 WWI draft registration card for a Joshua Duncan who was born in 1889 and was 28 years old at the time. It even has his signature and some other information.

I don't know if this individual ever served, but if this is your grandfather then he might have and was possibly disabled at some point. He would have been too old to serve in WWII.

My apologies if this is not your grandfather.

Yes this is him! Joshua Alfred Duncan and my grandmother was Viola, sometimes refered to as Ola.
