Not sure how many here with the GTI 2500 know about the chip yet?
Was reading in another forum that some Australian gold miners asked Garrett to fix the problem with the overload problem in high mineralized area's, So Garrett has made a chip for the GTI's. I emailed Garrett and they said if your detector is still under the 2 year warranty they will fix for no charge. Someone else on the forum said if warranty is over they will charge about $40.

I should add that If you just purchased a 2500, the chip has been added, check with Garrett if your not sure. They will fix the older GTI 2500's also.

I sent mine in today. 8)

Can you tell us more about the chip? I just bought my 2500 from Kellyco but there is no telling how long it was sitting on a shelf and may not be updated. Please post info to fing out if our detectors have the new chip.

Hi Lawman, I think they said the chip has been out since Aug. 2006.
You can contact Garrett, give then the serial ### & they can give you the details for your MD. If its still under warranty, its free.
Here is what they emailed me, hope I don't get in trouble for this.

Email "Hi David,

The new chip keeps the detector from going into overload in highly
mineralized ground. We only recommend the upgrade for those who hunt in
these type of conditions. If you're not sure about the minerals in your
area, take your detector out, lower it to the ground and if it starts to
chatter, then the ground is probably heavily mineralized.

If you would like the upgrade, just send us your control housing and
search coil to the address below attention repair department. Be sure
you include a note stating that you would like the new chip upgrade.
Since your detector is under warranty, there will be no charge.

Thanks,

I called Garrett on the telephone this morning and talked to Melinda, and she said that any GTI25oo made after sep.06 had the new chip in it already.

I forgot to put that the serial numbers start with 3 the second number is the year of manufacture and the third and fourth numbers are the month.

So if your detector has 3609xxxx it was made in Sept.06

Greetings all. I'm a newbie to MD/TH/Prospecting, and have a GTI 2500 that I picked up used. I saw this thread about the upgraded chip and was curious if anyone has gotten the upgrade, and if it is significantly improved over the original? I've been down this upgrade path before (working in the tech world) and was curious what the rest of the world thought about this chip, before I dive in and get it.

Thanks,

Where I live is not gold country, I'm waiting to get to gold baring ground to try my 2500 w/chip. I live in very cold climate also and have a short detecting season :-[, I guess just have wait!
I'm sure are some who have tried it out w/chip, hopefully they can respond to your question.
