Maybe a thread on hammerstones - Manos - Pounders - Pestles - Hand stones . Might help some new folk I.D. One thing all this tools have is wear battering grinding so on . A few to start show what you have

I 100% agree to that idea about the sticky thread. Have examples of well-used, somewhat-used, and not used stones to show differentiation and explantation.

Hammer stone these I believe were used in knapping.

The wear on the edges made this rock look curious to me so I took it home. Once I posted it on here it turned out to be a knapping stone for more precise striking. When I discovered this I looked it up for myself and found the same conclusion. Someone used this for quite some time. Glad I can appreciate it now.

Just layed some out of my truck today. The two brown stones were togather and the two quartz ones were very close togather notice the worked almost round quartze one. can anyone give me the brown stones material type ,very heavy.

Hammer stones and polish/grinding stones make up the most prolific
number of camp artifacts in my area. Most hammer stones are of harder material
like the quartz one or the large maul which is very heavy.


I've found that colorful stones were used a lot too as they are easy to spot
the next time the camp area was used.


Here are camp stones I found on the Rio Grande river this summer, 5" leaf shaped polishing stone
ground flat on two sides, a palm size hematite mano, very heavy and a quartz stone for polishing/pecking
which looks a lot like Sawmill Mans stones.

Now i heard Southfork is very picky with his groundstone i dont know this from experience or anything just heard it through the grapevine. I figure though if i had a superior collection like him id probably think the same way.

Classic dimpled Hammerstones 1 flat sided and fully worked into shape the other more spherical. 1 possibly a fine grained quartzite and the other a silicified sandstone.

I not picky but like to be 99 percent sure its an artifact at least in my own mind .

Ya i gotcha! If nobody told me they were rocks i wouldnt have been pushed to find quality artifacts.

Thats a very nice mano hammerstone. Would you consider that a discoidal? Also what are anvil stones used for?
