When asking seasoned miners about this yearâs so-called gold rush in Northern California, it can be a challenge to obtain trustworthy information.
âPeople who are smart donât advertise what theyâve found,â said Bob Van Camp, better known as âDigger Bob.â âIf youâre finding nuggets in an area, you donât tell anyone about it; Iâve made that mistake before.â
After all, if youâre a professional miner looking to make your fortune, itâs the nuggets youâre after. Flakes and dust are milquetoast â and altogether worthless â compared to heavy chunks of the shiny yellow stuff.
Northern California was pelted with record rainfall this winter, and miners predicted that once all the water washed away, gold would be left in its wake. It appears that their predictions are panning out.
âFolks are finding more gold â âflood goldâ â than usual this year,â said Diana Clayton, president of the Shasta Miners & Prospectors Association, which owns seven claims throughout Northern California and boasts about 350 members.
âMany of our members have been mining for decades,â Clayton said. âThey really know the area. And they know thereâs been changes.â
