The red tubular looking things...the specimen was scrubbed with a plastic fiber brush. The rock itself looks like slag.

Well i did not wash this rock at all. I only scrub a rock if I have an idea of what it is. But I see how you could percieve that. Those red looking hair like things are metallic looking and look as if they have been sewn into the rock and don't move easily, thats what threw me for a loop who knows could have been melted on. I havent wanted to mess with it too much it just looks unnatural to me. Whatevers under the black is pretty hard it did scratch glass and a tumbled piece of quartz, the black layer on top comes off easily like fresh pavement So any sure ways I can test this to find out if its slag I've spent way too much time staring at this one losing faith and moving on haha. Well I'm happy as long as I'm learning new things. its one of many lessons I will learn along my way. Thanks for your replies!

All right then. It's some kind of man made scrap of waste, whatever, the red fibers are not of natural occurrence. You should toss it.

I think its one of those which need to be seen in person by someone knowledgeable. To little to go by for even a qualified guess.
