Help! What is this?

I found this metal detecting. It appears to be made of copper. It says Pat. July 20 1886 on the side. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

That won't possibly be off the bottom of a walking cane ?

maybe, something was slid inside it you can see groves on the interior sides. however the tip is smooth. if it went to a walking cane you would think it would be scratched up.
That won't possibly be off the bottom of a walking cane ?
