Help with ID please on a "mystery" item found at beach today; also old button

Hi :hello:,

Was out this morning for 3 hrs. at a near-by old beach.

Found silver "Roosie"; 10K gold filled portion of a Bulova watch; an old button ; clads, and an item that I can't figure out what it is. :icon_scratch:

Hank thinks it might be a small pocket knife...could be :dontknow:

Maybe someone out there can help us on the ID :help:

It has a very pretty pattern , and I am presently electrolyzing it hoping to get the stubborn iron -like adhesions off of it.

The old metal button is also being electrolyzed ....it has a pattern on the face; the back 'hook" is gone. :(

Gold continues to elude me.....next time. :icon_sunny:

Here's pics ( also included the previous silver dimes now cleaned and shined; & cleaned "barnacled" bottle.

Thanks for looking

Lorraine

Lorraine: This might sound weird but It kind of looks like a hand fan, but I can't tell how long it is - next time you hunt you will find some gold, I hope

Thank you , Cave dweller.

It measures 2 inches long ....it could possibly be a small hand fan.

Well, I hope that I will be able to get the blade (s) loose...it's coming along.. I can now move the little hook at the top.

Here's a pic of the progress to this minute...may have to soak it in olive oil ; time will tell.

I know this item is not worth anything, and some may wonder why I am even bothering with cleaning it up, but I love things like this because I don't find them too often, if ever

definitely a pocket knife, I've seen them on necklaces before for women. Double check for markings, the case sure held up a lot better than the knives

Yes, it is a very old beach, and I have found many old coins and jewelry there. It is a good area to hunt particularly after a storm there is always much erosion.

Thank you, goldencoin; I 've been checking for markings..so far I can't find any, but there might be inside the hook ; have to wait until it's a bit cleaner.

Pretty ornate and with a gold hoop clip on it I would say a womans pocket nail file or something of that nature. Not sure on how many ornate flower designed pocket knifes are floating around.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm... I never thought of that...thanks for the info. It's getting cleaner by the hour, but there is hard tar-like residue inside the metal...I'm wondering if it is a knife or file..how would the blade or file be accessible? Can't figure that one out.

Right now it's in electrolysis, but I don't think it's going to do much on that hard crust.

I was thinking of soaking it in olive oil, but there is a can of WD40 someplace around the cellar so I'll find it and soak it in that.....I think that's a good suggestion; thank you, CB

The knife looks to be a key chain pocket knife.

I would like to know what kind of metal the case is,
looks obviously like a pocket knife, and the case held up well.
But the blades always rust out after a short life in the water and
I believe they will fall apart when you try to open it up.
If you do get it open then there will be big pitting on the blade and
possibly holes in it.
Certainly worth collecting...

thanks for the info, Richard,

The case is not gold...according to my acid test kit. Not sure what the metallic content is, but yes, it did hold up well...appears that this item was in the salty ocean for a long time...I found it up on the wet sand slope about 8" deep.
