Horse shoe from the 1600's & Counterfeit George II copper

I finished my chores, took Benson for a walk and there was still time to hit a really big new field just down the road. This field is next to one of the old creeks here, and not that far from the field behind the church next door. It took a while to get there, but when I did I couldn't believe the size of it. I only spent about 3 hours on it, just criss crossing and getting a feel for what might be there. The first part of the field was empty of all signals, then I started getting iron hits, then nothing, then iron. So I thought "What the heck" and dug one of the iron signals and up came this horse shoe from the 1600's. I kind of knew what it was, but had it confirmed by the UKDFD. The rest of that part of the field only had lead, buttons, a couple of modernish Georgian coins (only 1700's), but also a big tooth and lots of pointy flint. Anyway, enjoy the pics :icon_thumleft:

Thanks Dave, yup no Britannia since Decimalisation, shame really, first brought in by the Romans who miss heard or miss spelled the original name of the Brits. Originally we were the Pritani ( people of forms )

Hi HMN, for us, that is still fairly modern. When you can dig Celtic, Roman or Saxon anything post 1500's does seem quite modern. Not forgetting hammered coins were soon to be replaced by milled coins and the industrial revolution was a gnats fart around the corner. Having said that, a pristine Queen Anne "Vigo" would be very nice :laughing7:

What is that thing opposite from the horsetooth? Curiously interesting.

For some reason, around here we have a lot of pointy flint. Not worked, just pointy. Some are hollow, some aren't, but I have now decided to collect them, or at least some. There's also a ton of worked flint, but so far , no examples like your native american ones, at least locally.

Re: Horse shoe from the 1600's

The horse shoe doesn't do much for me, but your halfpenny/ counterfeit halfpence does! Even in that condition it's a collectible counterfeit. These websites contradict each other for date, but I would lean on it being 1752 having been labeled that from the Mike Ringo collection. I'd more than lean on it, I'd bet on it, and it would certainly make my day had I dug it.

You should update the title on this post because a few would probably be interested to see it. The first reference says "This coin is thought to be of American manufacture" but that is also something that might have changed as the years have gone on. There's no mention of it in the Stacks auction which means it is likely now thought of as being of British manufacture.

Re: Horse shoe from the 1600's

IP has the sharp eye and I wish more Brits would show more of their "modern" George coppers, especially the ones that are not regal, there are collectors and researchers who can possibly gain more insight on the contemporary counterfeits made in that time period by seeing what is being found in England. So thanks for posting your Georges! :icon_thumright:

Thanks for the info IP :icon_thumleft:, I would love to post more Georgian coppers, but the ground around here is normally very unkind to copper coins. Even the Viccy ones are pretty badly battle scarred, thats why I'm more interested in the hammereds and such artifacts that survive the ground. The reason for the original "Horse shoe" title was it's date range, more or less from our Civil War period.

Agreed, most of mine are too far gone to tell if they were counterfeit or Regal. But as I post everything, it will be on here. Its a great looking example of a counterfeit :icon_thumright:

You got a 1719 & me a 1721

The Hunts Button is a bonus to :)

Keep gridding :icon_thumright:

Not bad for three hours just walking the dog ...
I think in the middle of the field to the left of the photo are some old wells and one wall :icon_scratch: , but sometimes I'm wrong and it could be anything else. :D

It's very close in design to one that is rarer and would have been worth a few hundred min. even in that condition. I like them so think they're all good finds.

Hi "H" :hello:, the 2 lighter coloured fields have nothing in, I checked last year. The field you are looking at is next to the field I am in at the moment, but, for you I will look there tomorrow ;D, this field held a secret World War 2 anti V1 battery called Divers Unit 37, so what you are seeing might be the placings for anti aircraft batteries, I will check , I hope you have a great day detecting tomorrow my friend :icon_thumleft:
