I use a nice sharp hunting knife with a 7" blade and cut a 3 sided square plug.
I try to cut the plug "deeper" then where I think the coin is. This way it
makes sure the plug stays together better. Then I use my pinpointer and find where it is
in the hole or plug.
I retrieve the target and put the plug back in and step on it. When I am done you
can not see where I dug.

Depends on the terrain, For relic detecting out in the woods or serious digging I use a shovel.

For city parks, school grounds use a hand digger, Or Ground shark.
