I put in a test garden around 10 years ago. Most coins are at 6 inches - but I have nails and pull tabs and 1 silver ring in it as well. It helps new people learn how to detect (something I do as part of our GPAA club). I use it a lot in the summer (I have 9 detectors) before going out on trips. I also have a lot of gold in plastic bags with white paper in them (so I don't misplace them) that I throw down for practice.

People starting out in metal detecting are often quick to blame their detector when its often a case of not understanding how it works and learning to understand what it is telling you. A detector garden simplfies testing your gear. Also, I practice a lot for gold prospecting - knowing your detector is critical if you want to find gold nuggets of any size.

There have been several threads dealing with test gardens. Some like them (like me), others think they are a waste of time. Run a search on here and decide for yourself.
