You have to enjoy reading. Read history books dealing with your town / city, county, and state. The best areas to research are in your own "back yard"---your town and county. There are enough hidden valuables in every county in the country to keep a person very busy. A very good cover story is, "I'm an amateur genealogist." That allows you to research in county courthouse records and libraries without hassle. The worse thing you can do is say anything about treasure hunting / relic hunting. That is a definite :nono:

The quest for genealogy is among the best covers for searching public records. On the other hand, there are five fingers also. If some one wants to help with your search, you need to sound intelligent on the search for ancestors. Do your home work before you go to the court house or where ever, continue your home work at the court house or other public records establishment. One of the biggest treasure leads you will find is from other people, often accidentally, and often elderly people. They have many stories to tell and would love for some one to listen. I know the location of two illegal gambling establishments, long gone from view in Kansas from just listening. One is now a bean field and very accessible. The other can be seen from a busy road. I had been by the second one many times but never knew what was there. Another dates from the early 30's when a jar of gold coins was dug accidentally while digging a cellar. The Mother of the son doing the labor was scared of the Govt and they were turned in. Is there more there? Based on who owned the property before, very likely. The cellar is still there. The approximate location where they were found is still there. Look for the people that had incomes but did not trust banks. Find out whose land was foreclosed on in the depression. They were forced to leave, even escorted off the premises by the sheriff. Some could only walk away from a small nest egg they had hidden. Some did use the chicken coop as a bank. Chickens are great as watch dogs. The term posthole bank was forged in truth.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!

Bob

Illegal gambling in Kansas!!! Oh, tell me it isn't so !!!!

I'm in McPherson county....anywhere close?

Around here, the latest beans are just being harvested. You might be able to get on that field. Unless they are going to immediately plant it in wheat. It's still nice, good detecting weather.

yep find out where the seniors are hanging out and spend some time, every time i come across old folks at the park , EVERY one of them has had some sort of story to tell, or knows where something used to be, pay close attention to what they are telling you, last week
myself and saginawian were out and came across this old guy walking, he saw our equipment and right away it was almost as is he couldnt wait to tell us of a spot he came across while out walking
I would estimate he was about 70 or so but he had grown up in the area and could tell us everything about where ppl used to live and where some good spots were, he proceeded to decribe how to get to a stone foundation about a half a mile from where we were standing, and the only reason he knew the place was there is because he had grown up across the street. in the conversation he described 2 or 3 more spots that we had allready cleaned out but he knew all of them, from his description we were on the site 15 minutes later after passing the big rock turning right ,making a left at the group of hardwoods, and heading straight for the big jack pine...get the picture?
I hope to hell we run across him again, as a matter of fact i know a lot of these old folks walk on a daily schedule about the same time, i will be hanging out in the same spot we met him last time, i know he will be coming by.
and like someone else posted above they love to talk. dont rush em either chat and bs for a while once they see your interested in thier stories they will open up and tell you some good stuff.

I juast recently offered to do a "show and tell" at a retirement community ...the chat was on Treasures in my area..i was SO hoping one of them would pony-up a good location, heck I even offered to split the funds w/ them. But sadly, no takers. I did have a GREAT time...and they loved the off beat topic!

Perhaps offer to do one in your area and hopefully you'll have more luck than I did! Plus, you'll be giving back to your community!
