In General,
The really big trees are in the oldest part of town(usually) go there, along old clothes lines, when a person is driving/walking/etc. along and you go past an unusual plant out in a field (evergreen of some type, two trees/growth of any two items spaced about the width of a wagon or two apart, an unusual plant growing (Palm Tree), etc.) well, many times it indicates humans have been there. The two plants standing a wagons width apart indicate the opening of a driveway to a property. There are other "signs" of humans having been around a spot we just need to relax and allow what we are seeing to sink into the 'possibility' slot in the roulette wheel in our brain. Best of success to you in your searching.........63bkpkr

Since I looked at where you indicate you are I'm guessing that at least some of the Civil War was fought there. If so then a little research might indicate the number of battles (if any) in the area and where those might have been. Also, if indeed there were troop movements in the area then where would the troops have camped/stopped for the night/week etc.? Water is nice to have close by when one camps with a lot of people so where are the creeks and rivers along the "oldest roads in the area"? Where would be a good defensive position to camp/fight from IF the other side came up on your encampment or said differently, where could we stop for the night that might give us an edge over an attacker?

Some great ideas, thanks!
