I was getting off the highway one day and noticed that there was slate on both sides of the road so curiously I pulled over and check out the area I found an interesting rock that was gold shiny.. However after some research I know most of it is mica. But I know that there are quartz veins all in this slate bed because I can see them. My question is what do you think is the chances of finding gold here? My other question is could some of this be gold in the pic of the rock that i attached ?

welcome 33 - to answer, its probably fair to good. and crushing and panning one of the rocks is called for as pics not conclusive imo. Also, check out TAKODA's
pics for comparison.

No I haven't figured it out what it was yet but I did put it in some muratic acid and one part of the rock got eaten but the shiney and the quartz stayed. Other thing I wanted to mention is some of the yellow is flakey and will flake off if I poke at it with a knife. But others won't it seems soft so I'm hopeful. I went back to the spot yesterday and grabbed some quartz from the same area I will post pics soon. It looks like the quartz have pearl flakes with gold flakes all on one side. Is that micashist? Thank you guys for answering my post and I have to say that this is becoming addictive. I'm shopping for pans and metal detectors and reading all I can.

Yes, its a learning process that we all go through. It can be lots of fun each step of the way. (and yes, could be micaschist).

Here are the other samples I got from the area. I also found out that there were 13 gold mines in my county between 1804 and 1947 none of them stayed open very long because of the civil war and the world wars. The union army destroyed a number of them. So I'm hoping to get some panning going soon. There are many creeks and rivers in my area. Any advice on where in a small creek you should pan or does it matter much? I'm going to crush these samples and get some dirt from the area and pan it. I will let you guys know how it goes.
Thanks again

Just based on the pics, I would say no. DO NOT crush those specimens that appear to have visible gold! They may be woth 3X spot. I just posted a way to check for gold in a rock. Look for it in the forum labled Gold Prospecting. If some of those rocks appear to have lots of gold, the measuring instructions will tell you how much. TTC

I have been traveling but I did come across some iron pyrite in Peru. I bought it from a native lady who had a large collection of beautiful rocks. I didn't bring my detector which was stupid because it is all almost virgin soil... Boooo me
A lady told me a place were some had buried 200 grams of gold in a can. But she needed a detector to find it... Next time though
