I got out for a full day of detecting with a couple buds and our plan was to knock on doors and get on some new land. The first door knock was for an amazing looking site which had not been hunted and was old...and I almost convinced her to let us hunt. She did invite me back in a couple weeks so that she could think about it. No one was home on the next door knock but the third was a success...only problem was the sites had been detected before and they were pretty quiet today. Undaunted we hunted for a couple hours and after a bite to eat went searching for more new land. No one home on the next two door knocks so we threw in the towel and decided to hunt a site we had on standby...and I am glad we did.

After a quick chat with the landowners daughter we were off and hunting. I went right to the back end of the field where there is a patch we hadn't hunted much. At the bottom corner of the field I got a strange and deep signal. I dug it out and saw a cut copper in the dirt. I thought that was weird and checked the hole and saw more cut coppers! Then the first large silver came out and I knew I was on something good...and very strange! All of the coppers are 1864 New Brunswick One Cents! The Silvers are an 1854 US Half Dollar, a Victorian Half Crown, a Victorian Florin and a Victorian Shilling...all in the same hole and buried deep...below the plow line.

My question is why would someone cut up all of those coppers and bend and smash those silver and then bury them? Very strange...but despite the condition I could not be happier...everything is still easily identifiable so I am thrilled with that.

Also found a 1932 2 Ore and an1894 large cent in another part of the field.

Props to Iron Patch for assisting with the British silvers...I texted him from the field!

All I can say is....How Bizarre

And, too bad they ruined those nice coins. Maybe they got the word that money is the root of all evil and decided to do something about it :tongue3:

Are the silver coins fire damaged? they look so mangled... I've not seen anything like that before.

Oh yeah: Giant congrats on the find. I have never found a seated coin, but I would count that half if I found it, mangled or not.

Very, and I mean very well played sir!

Thanks...not sure I did get them all. I was able to pair up five of the coppers but that left four unpaired halves...could be four more half coppers waiting for me there...and maybe more silvers! One way to find out!

Cool & interesting Find !

I can think of Several Scenarios, But :dontknow:

Counterfeit ? or at least Thought to be Counterfeit ?
Caught in a grinder of some Type 1 by 1 & collected over the years
by the Grinder Owner or Operator ?
Used for illegal purposes and Considered dirty Money by the Last person to handle it ?
Stolen & Destroyed out of Fear ?
Stolen & Destroyed out of Spite by someone Holier then Thou ?
destroyed by a very strange kid ? or mental deficient ?

The strangest coin find I have seen. Somebody or something really hated those coins. Those silvers look like they were in an explosion

Wow...gives new meaning to the term.."hammered silver"...it appears the silvers were literally hammered, judging by the many impressions. We'll probably never know the reason for the damage/stashing, but you've definitely uncovered something really, really neat. Congrats on a great find! Ddf

Thanks! The mystery of why is half the fun with this find...although I wouldn't be complaining if at least the silver's were a little nicer...but it was still a thrill seeing that dirty silver in the dirt!

Congratualtions on the very interesting coins! :occasion14: I would go back and hunt until no sound is heard, then bring a PI detector and finish the job! :icon_thumright:

Wow,, if I uncovered a bucket list 1854 Seated Half Dollar in that condition, I would be very sad. To find so many coins that were obviously damaged on purpose, would probably have me cussing under my breath.
Congrats on your finds and I feel your pain.
Now go find the rest of those coppers.
