Illinois forum strangest find-update, they're glass

Kinda getting there guys. Just going through some of my projects and cleaning up some of the year's goodies. Found this old rattling tin I dug up last summer. It was rusted shut. I've found and tore up many of these over the years, always hoping to find that elusive sweet thing inside. Had honestly lost track of this one and found it on one of my backshelfs, basting in oil for several months now. It slid open slowly with some fine blade work prying involved.

This time it was not old watch springs or parts, glass or metal. Four stones appeared along with three round items, I beleive to be non-metallic. No idea what they are. Now I gotta get these stones checked out to be sure, but they look real nice.

No telling who lost them or when but they were in old dirt in context with other circa 1900 era finds if I recall. Could turn into a real merry Christmas for sure!

Just back from the jewelers, no beep on the diamond tester, and the head guy said nope, no sale! Arghhh!

Should have known, opened another rattling tin this morning, it had broken glass in it...

Yeah Mark, I think they are very similar to the four diamonds I found in a brooch at Trout Park some years ago. Those were id'd as miner cuts, all done prior to 1905. They were also all smaller than these beauties. While the cuts look rough, the facets are smoothed, not scratched by the years in the tin or its other contents and no signs of thermal fractures, which you would find in glass or costume stones.

I think this tin came out of the extended South Street sidewalk work from last summer.

Re: Illinois forum strangest find

Let me see, Wally got a possible photo locket, very nice! A token that looks like it came from a prohibition-era remedy, a religious medal for someone who feels hopeless (save that for me and next year's digs) a Hawaiin-themed emery board, a primevial pokiemon figure and some kind of holed tooth? I thought that holed tooth was a bannerstone at first, almost super wow banner but it looks too small. Is it actually metal, perhaps a bullet-turned-fishing-sinker?

I vote the Hawaiin-themed emery board and pokiemon-like thing as strange indeed.

Strange digs!
