I tried the lemon juice and salt that someone on this site recommended, made a big difference. I just dug this up a couple hours ago under 1st st. in my home town. They dug up the road and the concrete foundation that a train trolly was on. This was under a sidewalk they busted up.

Salt will pit or break down the coin (especially copper). My recommendation is NOT to use salt. Use heated hydrogen peroxide. Salt will also leave a film or discolor the coin as you can see.

appreciate the tip,
the first pic of the coin (black) is after a warm peroxide bath (about 15 minutes). I'm new at trying to clean dug coins, but when I tried the lemon juice and salt mixture, it started showing a big difference right away. There is some itting on the coin, but think it was there before I started trying to clean it.
This is a pic of the back, and there is not as much pitting. Any tips on how long a peroxide bath should take, and how to get the black off if I don't use the lemon and salt?

Yeah using the salt and lemon has stripped the color from this coin. I heat the peroxide up until it is boiling and drop the coins in for about 5 min and they come out great. If they are really bad it might take two tries, but I definitely wouldn't use salt and lemon or salt and vinegar on any coin that my have some value. I clean all of my clad with salt and vinegar in a tumbler and that works great.
