There's the question if a ratchet strap, what was the function of the hole.
Rope/wire?
If an implement off a piece of equipment what function would it serve?

IMO... this is a wire tensioner... pole mounted.
Probably for fence wires...

Yes that has merit
Though the cog is really close to the bracket for any free travel
What purpose would this have played on equipment.

I think a query into direction/sprocket teeth has to be looked into. (invented)

Just some mind fodder for those that didn't know the difference.
A cogwheel is any wheel with teeth.
A gear is a cogwheel used mesh with another cogwheel.
And a sprocket is a cogwheel that links to another cogwheel by means of a chain.

Could well be .. The Eureka Mower Company, established 1867 and incorporated in 1905, made a lot of agricultural / farm equipment well into the late 1940's .. and maybe later.

It looks like the crank/ratchet mechanism that was on our old windmill to adjust the fin in relation to the blade to compensate for wind speed or to stop it all together. It used a cable and didn't need to take up or release much cable for the adjustment. I think it may have had a thumb operated lever to lock it in place. I'll see if I can find what's left of ours from our windmill and get a pic.

No well, or windmill that I know of, it was found behind an old cemetery. That dates back to mid-1700s. There is, or once was a corn field behind the cemetery, but it's now wooded area.. It was also the same spot where I found the pocket watch that I posted here on treasure net. And a mung other items, button, dog tag, glass fragments, extra. There could have been a old home, or just a dumping ground. It's hard to say.

yes it is... what i meant was... "hand held" as opposed to a mounted version.

Yours is a mounted version.
Both versions are "wound" by hand.
