Seems like head is mounted to close to the shaft. I have to use a lot of force to get cover on and closed.

No you need to have the shaft pin locked into the first opening. The cover will not hit the shaft lock.

The kid I bought it from had been using it like that for a few years. I guess I should have put my glasses on and really looked at it.

Easy mistake. Everyone's done it once.

I figured something was put together wrong. I just bought it but got no instructions. If I don't find a pair of reading glasses I can't see anything. Getting old ain't for wimps.

You can download a manual from Garrett for free, here: Garrett Hobby Owners Manuals

They describe exactly this detail in the manual, under assembly. :-)
