Primary Interest:
Relic Hunting
Well I got a tip that all of you need to listen to, first off I have been a relic hunter for 30 plus years. Always though the bigger the better with coils. Almost 15 years ago I bought a Blue Max 6" coil for my Eagle Spectrum, never even got it dirty. I though it couldn't possibly get any real depth so I stuck to the 9.5. Well I have hunted my yard and my neighbors for 25 years. My neighbors yard is very trashy and noisy. I have found a lot of coins in these yard over the years Seated Liberties, Half dimes etc. Well I was looking for something This weekend and found the 6" coil, so I though why not give it a try after 15 years. I came up with a new program for the coil on the Spectrum and started on my Neighbors yard for about 2 hours. Well I could not believe the signals I was getting nor the depth. I was digging wheat's at 7". I have a hole plug coin retriever I use in yards it is 7" long. I cut a plug coin was still in the hole I looked in the hole and there at the bottom was the penny the impression in the bottom of the plug.
Finds Indian Head 1904, Wheat's 1920, 1929, 1938,1950, 1952, 1957 D and 12 other newer coins.
Update just found several more wheats and a 1911 2.5 gold coin looks like maybe it was a ring at one time has 2 marks on the back need help on how to clean it.
No there is no D mint mark don't I wish!
The tool I use was custom made for me by Wohler 20 years ago, I dont have the contact information any more, it helps me get into nice yards as it makes nice clean holes.
I included a pic.
Todays Wheats Aug 13 1916,1918,1922,1923,1928,1934,1936,1945,1951 and one buff nickel cant see date. Will change pic tomorrow.
Todays Finds Aug 14 1942 Merc, Another Buff, 1944 wheat, Belt Buckel with some gilt, a piece of a button that says something holiday on it.

For those asking about the hole plug tool I will make another post in recovery tools and take many pictures and write the specs of the hole pluger so you can make your own.
To answer other questions it makes nice holes you push it in with your feet, sometimes I jump on both sides in hard dirt, yes I missed once and runined a Barber half but never since then.
The grass almost never dies just try and not mess with the upper part of plug with the roots. After I hunt a nice lawn at the end of the day I water their lawn and I keep a small bag og grass seed, that
I sprinkle over the holes.

That is one beautiful coin  Haven't found one of those ...yet. I don't think I'll ditch my trusty shovel. That hole plug cutter is nice for parks, but, I would be worried about damaging too many coins with it. As far as smaller coils goes, I like using smaller coils. I use a big coil for my Ace 250 sometimes (field hunting, and open woods). However, when I am in an any area with a significant amount of rubble in it I use a small coil. The beam is more focused, and goes just as deep. Congratulations HH M

Nice gold Indian. Just wondering about the 1922 Lincoln. Does it have a D mint mark or nothing. A lot of the 1922's had bad strikes possibly due to the dies. so the D on some didn't show or were faint. Just a 1922 Denver was struck that year.

Now that would of made my day. Sounds like a good hunt for the day.

AWESOME finds!!! I wish we had dirt like that here in GA, just sun baked red clay that would destroy a digger like that. Keep on hunting with that big coil and keep us updated on your finds!

Simply awesome find with the 1911 Indian gold. I am JEALOUS! :) Many congrats.

I personally think that ANYONE who finds a GOLD coin should be immediately (after proof) put on the banner. I don't ever expect to find one, which makes it extra special to those who do.

Gold is .... gold! It's worth a reward!

Just my two cents... - Noodle

I read this post a week ago and thought I saw a question that has not been answered. Now I can't find the question in the post, but I will give a try at answering it. The question was, "How to clean the coin to remove what appears to be solder from a mounting the coin was probably on?" Years ago an acquaintance purchased a gold coin necklace from a Gypsy. It had 10 - $20 gold coins soldered to a gold chain. He said he paid $200. I could hardly believe him, but that is what he said. He was kinda shady, so who knows. Anyway, he said he was going to use nitric acid to dissolve the solder and that the acid would not affect the gold. I know there is an acid test for gold, maybe called a streak test, where the gold is rubbed onto a slate stone and various strengths of nitric acid are used to determine what carrot the gold is. I would suggest getting more information since the nitric acid is not exactly friendly and you don't want to ruin the coin. However, I think this is how the coin would be cleaned if you wanted to do that.......... Fantastic find. I can only home that I will find one some day. That is what treasure hunting is all about...the thrill of maybe finding the big one. HH and good luck with the clean up process. Ralph

Re: It aint never hunted out. Update, US 2.5 Gold Coin!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes I said

I use one of those on the golf course, or something similar, for setting a new hole for the flags. Now i'm considering on getting one of those myself. Never thought of that.

AWESOME find! Question? When ya cut a perfect circle plug, does the grass grow back green or when you return the next time are there a whole lot of round brown polka-dots everywhere ya dug? Just curious. Also, I would not reccommend an apparatus like this, if you don't know how to pinpoint well, I have seen some nice coins almost cut in half by a " plugger ".......... Not GE

If the soil is moist the circle will blend in and you'll never know a plug was pulled. Only in dry soil is there a problem. The grass in the circle will die and therefore it would stand out.

It doesn't get any better than that - nice find!
