Hi Everyone ;D
I started my hunt at a site where I had previously seen lots of flintstones
(not Fred & Wilma), hoping for flakes or points.
Found neither, but did toss a very 'Hot' rock in with the stones I gathered.
Next I headed to the cove, and concentrated on a small area next to the ballast pile.
I dug out every peep, pop, and null from the Safari.
covered about 400 square feet in 4 hours.
Crude lead anchor pendant, 2nd found in vicinity. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,343333.0.html
What I believe is a pewter Earhorn, eh, what did he say ??
Large Eagle Artillery button, 23 MM.
Tiny brass plate, 11 X 20MM '50' in oval, crossed sabers, bust, and axe in beam... :help:
nice little perfume bottle with string around neck.
old brass cufflink with wedge shank,
heavy silver cufflink,
3 lead seals.
5 pewter buttons.
another light colored, low tone coin, same reading and appearance as yesterdays,
worn thin IH's (solved).
After rinsing my hot rock, it appears to be a bead with a gold vein :hello2:
Best Hunt in a long Time, love this treasure hunting stuff
Great Digs to You All

Congrats on your finds today Herbie! :notworthy:
I really like the lead anchor pendant and the crystal perfume bottle!
The silver cufflink looks real old too! :o

I'd sure like to know what the significance is of the brass plate with '50' in oval,
the crossed sabers, the bust and the axe in beam mean! :icon_scratch:

Have a great weekend buddy,
Dave

PS. This looks a lot like an Indian Trade Bead :icon_scratch: , I used to collect them years ago.

Nice Finds Herbie, To bad about the flints buddy. :-\ But you've got some more neat finds.Hard to believe that people have not gone after those areas you hunt. :icon_scratch: Or was this one harder to get too.I know awhile back you were right out somebodies back door it looked like. :laughing7: Not so easy here it's a full fledge mission to find old sites here. :( Anyway good luck on your future hunts. Bye the way I'm purdy sure the piece your calling a ear horn is the spout off a old tea pot broke at the solder joint.

Herbie,
Outstanding old finds. Is there any chance that anchor pendant could have been a primative fish hook? :icon_scratch:
Awesome variety.

Thanks Pete,
I do believe you're right about the Teapot, the area where it would have attached is even shaped to fit a curved surface.
It's an oldie, blistered tin/pewter, with a little arrow shaped decoration at the pouring tip.
Best digs to You :hello:

Hi Dave,
I can't wait to get some info on both the plate and the button, I can't find any similar button in Tice or online, hoping someone can give me some info on these :help:
I am pretty sure they will date 1800-1830 as all other buttons here are from that era.
I think that bead may be the prize of the day :D
It gives a loud gold tone on my Safari, and the visible metal appears to be gold.
this would lead me to believe it to be a Native Artifact rather than a trade bead.
HH! the Spoon is Coming under your coil soon !!!

Re: Items from small area. Unknown 1812 Artillery button

psst teapot spout * ---

pre civil to civil war item-- wiskerless young abe lincoln the "rail splitter" -thus the axe in wood - due to the crossed sabers ( much like a "x" mark vote) -I'd say a military unit that supports lincoln * --50th illinois maybe (lincoln was from illinois ) 50 (th) most likely a military unit number --like the 50th (whatever unit from whatever state ) --clearly a union item (lincoln supporter)

the sinker type item night be just that a old hand made type sinker or net weight --the gold might be brass

your "anchor" --might be a old type type of fishing hook , dual hook type bait put on ends fish swallows you pull it forwards it snags em .

nice cuff link and buttons --the one is called a cannon / artillery eagle button * and was common on pre civil war uniforms -- with abe the rail splitter and the eagle button both there -- it might be just pre civil war or a very early civil war era wreck site --if there both from the same wreck

Hello Doug and Ivan, :hello:
I had the same thoughts about the anchor, especially considering the second 'stronger' hole in the shank.
but...
Being almost two inches across the flukes, and made from soft lead, this would not hold a fish of the size that could mouth it.
Not cast as the example previously found, this one is carved with a saw or knife,
a lot of time and effort went into it's making.
leads me to think of a sailor on a voyage with time on his hands, as with scrimshaw art.
Ivan, nice 'Railsplitter' lead, bust has the 'Lincoln Beard' :notworthy:
the two veiws of the rectangular tag are it's two sides, what could it have been attached to that would show both sides, maybe the center part of a multiple piece medal or badge :icon_scratch:
Thanks for your replies and great hunts to you!

Re: Items from small area. Unknown 1812 Artillery button

yep abe lincoln "the rail splitter" --supporter trinket all the way * --50th ( artillery ? button being artillery / infantry / calvary) --from where ever. --clearly pre civil war to civil war era item * along with pre civil war era cannon eagle button -- i'd say --if they are from the same wreck -- that the vessel wrecked just prior to or during the early stages of the civil war most likely  --nice purfume bottle by the way rare to find them fully intact. with the stopper in em

having two holes on either side -- using a leather thong thread it thru the top hole (from front to rear)---- (with the 50 rear facing inwards) run the thong to the bottom holes --- put it thru the bottom hole ( from back to front) and "knot it"-- worn this way lincoln faces out and if flipped one sees the "50"

Re: Items from small area. Unknown 1812 Artillery button

Good morning Herbie,
1-The cuff link is not that old late 1800's - early 1900's much like the one I got below.
2-The artillary button like the one below  23mm
3-That anchor in my opinion is somebody with alot of time on there hand.Much like a fisherman would have at times.Out on a trip in between haulbacks or to and from the fishing grounds.Lots of people make neat little things to keep there mind off things.May have been nailed to a bunkroom wall & after the crew changed out or what ever was tossed off the boat. :-\ :icon_scratch:
4-The other small button that looks like it might be a cuff link is your older one.But I think it is a sleeve button though.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

Re: Items from small area. Unknown 1812 Artillery button

Again, Thanks All !
Pete, That Leigh site was the one I was looking for :hello2:
I was browseing Ridgeways Archives, more CW items.
Need to bookmark my sites more clearly...
Now that I had some clues to read the backmark, it's the AY51b a little further down, Same face, with 'Treble Gilt*Standard Color' backmark :hello2:
Appreciate the time spent on this, this is my first example of this Artillery button :D
I have the same thoughts about that anchors history..
From prior posts i assumed all six sided pieces were cufflinks, good to know they are sometimes buttons.
Ivan,
I never would have recognised the Lincoln bust without the railsplitter clue.
this is the first CW era find from this site, everything else has been 1800-1840.

I did some tone comparisons on the stone bead, it reads and sounds closest to a
2-1/2 dollar US gold coin, ( I compared a variety of small nuggets, a $5 gold piece,
and some brass bits.) both yeild a fairly loud signal, and a reading in high 20s on the Safaris' numeric scale.
Apparently there is more metal in this bead than what is visible.
I am posting the Lincoln item on whatsit, and the bead on native artifacts to see if I can get input from others who may not be 'Todays Finds' readers.
thanks again, and best wishes
