Here's the two best finds from this afternoons hunt. Firstly a large medieval buckle, followed later by a large hammered silver coin of James 1st. The coin is weakly struck on the obverse, but otherwise a nice large unclipped coin.
Robert.

Bump.

More need to see this.

Here's the reality on this one; You could (like me) hunt for 20+ years & never get a Shilling of any King/Queen of Britain. These were a huge amount of money at the time, plus a very large coin, therefore they were looked after carefully & not easily lost.

In fact you my hunt your whole life & never see one as nice as this one!

I may have jumped in, if he had messed with the patina of the piece. But he did a great job 'cleaning' which to me looks like he ran it under the tap to take off the dirt. So not really a great deal of cleaning done.

As for me getting one, it would be nice, but I bet mine will be all beaten up by the plough (if I'm very lucky). They are a huge chuck of silver.

I know this is mostly a US site, but lets get behind this a little more. He spent the time to share with us, better photos after pressure to get a better camera from his own pocket to share an absolutely top of the shelf hammered. Trust me, Tnet will likely never see a better Shilling in another 20 years of all of us Brits trying our hardest. Simple. I'm not likely to need to eat my words either :D (although if I did, I would prefer it was me that got it) ;D

It is a very nicely struck coin, a bit weak on the portriate :P but that's usuall for the coinage of the period....yea BANNER :icon_thumleft:

It is indeed banner-worthy. For all the reasons pointed out by Crusader this coins has it all: it's a good (although weak at the minter's hands) strike, it's virtually unblemished by plow or clipping, it's rare to come across in nearly the same manner as a gold coin, and it has terrific history. Not much left to make this banner coin material.

Rob...solid coin. Makes me get a drool bucket just to look at it. You did a fine job 'cleaning' it up as well.

Very nice...it does not look like to weak of a strike...

QUESTION: Why would a coin be "clipped" and because this one is not does it increase the value?

Thanks..I apologize for the rookie question.

Be Well.

P.S. I nominated for banner.
