NJLARGECENT and I are up in Lancaster,MA, which is the state's oldest town. We're hunting near his sis-in-laws house which is next to the first paved road in the state. There are plenty of woods to hunt, and we were told there are cellar holes.

Yes please!

We managed to find one and it produced like crazy. Below are a bunch of pics. I will try to add write ups tomorrow but we left NJ at 4:30am and detected all day. I'm beat!

My finds include buttons, axe heads, decorative pieces, a blade of some sort, buckles, and many items that will be published in What Is It.

Hey I found a relic identical to the one shown in pic 11 bottom left hand side except mine still has the ring on the bottom. It is dated 1865 - 1869 I think. I have been trying to figure out what it is. Looks like some sort of buckle that goes on a suspender or something

Definitely looks like a suspender buckle! I'm going to post in "What Is It" later and hope for a positive ID.

Great finds! Love the ice skate. I'm in southern NH, not too far from Lancaster. Can't wait to get out into the woods around here. Seeing what you've found makes me want to go...NOW....Hope you next hunt is as interesting! Take care of that sore back, blisters are easier to deal with :laughing7:.

HH,
Anita

Thanks. This one was one of those, "Now why is THIS here??" finds. As was NJLARGECENT'S 1969 Jamaican 1 cent. At least the skate matches the time period, but I don't know of any nearby lakes.

Nice bunch of finds. I lived in Lancaster 25 years ago and wish I had a detector then. The town forest has many old cellar holes, homes burned by indians, 1750's or so. Also miles of old wagon roads and footpaths that must be hiding colonial goods. If I was'nt such a hermit that hates traffic I should go down there to see my grandmother. I remember her showing me a coin found in her garden years ago that had an indian w/ bow on it and a tree on the reverse, she does'nt remember what she did with it now. I was 16 when I lived there and rode a moped all over that area's old trails and I can say it would take years to cover part of it. I did find an old lock from a flintlock pistol, just poking around a cellar one time. I ended up selling it on ebay for $135 a few years ago. Keep swinging, there's a lot of history hiding there, good luck!

Can I go visit your grandmother on your behalf?? :laughing7:

Definitely go visit her. My 93 year old grandmother passed away on Wednesday. I was supposed to visit her next weekend but never got that last chance. Take advantage of it while you can. And of course, bring me with you!

Thanks to everyone who's been following this thread. I'm cleaning stuff off and will post a bunch of stuff in What Is It when I take new pics (if I can't ID them myself). I'm particularly interested in the buttons. The first cellar hole we hit I think dates to the mid-1800s, maybe earlier. The 2nd and 3rd cellar holes were really overgrown and hard to search around, but the surrounding area produced some good finds. I'll write up a long story about the 2 days. Can't wait to get back to MA... sorry MA-ers. I'm comin' back!

Hey all... NJLARGECENT and I appreciate all the comments. I finally got a thorough write-up and gallery posted online if you're interested:

I hear ya. I'm in Bergen County where properties are small and people are really protective of their lawns. Funny thing is, people sometimes say, "go ahead" and then when they see a shovel they change their tune. Um... I have to dig targets out of the ground! How did you think I would extract them?

Do you hit the beaches a lot near Bayville? I was just in AC and only got 2 hours of detecting in.

Nice work. LOVE the vintage ice skate! Hope you will preserve and keep that one!

Cheers,

Buck
