While checking in on the forums today I get the urge to go dig a hole or two myself, but it's already 2 PM ?

I decided on a spot not too far away that has given up at least 10 coppers in the past, and just had a deep plow this spring. So off I went.

I don't have any field shots, or any dirty pictures, as I didn't think there was any thing worth posting. It was only after rinsing off the mud that I realized that I had something. What I had thought was a dandy button turned out to be something I have wanted for some time, a one piece Navy (I would have taken a canon with equal appreciation). This is a very large button at 33mm. A quick online search suggests a date range of 1774 to 1787.

According to this site, Navy buttons
You can see the same as I found a short way down the page, it's the biggest in a group of 13.

Now I have seen many dug Navy buttons in better shape, but I can't say I've seen one as big ?
When the mud came off this piece, and it revealed itself, was one of my best MDing moments, expecting nothing, and getting something. Cool !

Good luck out there.

Rick that is a killer button:headbang:

I have seen a few like that there are many varieties..They usually date right around the Revolutionary War period..
In the Cobb collection one was found on a set of breeches along with many GW buttons..
HEAVYMETALNUT found one not long ago..Those 2 had chain links instead of rope..More research is needed this could be a BANNER button for sure..

Definitely huge for a military button! I'd say that time frame is about right.

Bet it made your day. Edit: Just read through your post and see it did!

It sure did, I waited almost as long for it as I did spanish silver.

So to the others that have found this button was yours as big ?

Just looking at a new post and link to a button site I see no others as big.

I guess I'm wondering what sort of rarity this might have ?

Just checked, only have 2 at 30mm? Big enough?

We get about 2000+ buttons a year (recently with Cru'Dad) & only have 2 after 20+ years.......

Thanks Eric.

After CRUSADRER's post we do get an idea of the rarity of this find. It may not be as pretty as some of the gold coin(s), (6) posted, but it is rarer to find, find then any of the above ?

True. I'm only counting the 30mm versions, is that the size of yours?

I recently dug one that has what appears to be the same anchor and made the same only it is about the size of a silver dime. I am not home at the moment but I will post a photo later. Any advise on where to get info on buttons? I will post it here hopefully you guys can tell me something about it . Thanks

As well as the link in the original post check this site, seems more date specific to type.
