Man, what a find! I take it that you haven't found the watches yet? Maybe the next time out. As for getting the coins out of the clumps, you might contact the science department at your local college, and ask one of the profs if he has any ideas. He might be able to give you some idea as to what might dissolve it so that the coins can be removed.

Anyway, nice find, and I'll be waiting to see if you do find the watches. WTG

My Guess it is Plastic that Because it melted to Liquid Mixed with the Ashes
And Appears to be Concrete. Try the Acetone ;)

Do you have a Torch ? Do a test.
Heat up one of the coins till it gets Red.
See If you can pick it out of the Conglamorate
With a Needle Nose Pliars. Just be carefull Not to
Get a Nose full of the Fumes if I'm right.

I love finds like this Kas!

No doubt I'd go back to look for the watches. Find out what room they were in...and the orientation of the house. They would just drop straight down. They might be melted globs...but they would be gold still!

Dan,

I know what room they're in, and the layout of the house. Problem is, anything other than coin mode goes crazy with all the metal laying around burnt up. Coin and jewelry goes absolutely nuts with sounds. I plan on making a screen with half inch holes to sift the ash by the shovel full. Were talking about ash packed down for a year. No roof on the place, no walls, just black ash. No pieces of wood of any length. I spent like two hours on my knees with only a dx-1 probe. My pouch was so heavy I had to take it off and set it aside and fill it. I didn't move more than five feet to find 834+ coins. It was crazy man. Still coins there.

KAS,

That is a super duper bunch of finds. I would definitely classify that as a cache. You are one lucky guy. If that much was found so far, you have to wonder how much more is in the ground or still in the house. Keep us updated please.

Re: Large hoard found in ashes. UPDATE- Site Pics and more coins.

Rainy today, but did manage to get out for an hour with the sands scoop. To wet for the detector, so I scooped and sifted and shoveled.

These people put change everywhere. I found a cosmetic case with coins in it. Maybe the girls keep change in them? Anyway picked up 75 more coins some with the scoop and some just eyeballing them.

Haven't hit the grassy areas shown just yet. I'm taking Thursday and Friday off. May get to it then. After that it's suppose to get a wee chilly. No watches found today.

Pics of site as promised. The total coin count is over 900 in three hours of hunting.

Ken

Just a thought since I to believe that it is plastic mixed with ash. Do what all of the copper wire salvagers are doing and get yourself a burn barrel with 1/4" wire mesh to go over the top. Put the chunk of whatsit on the wire mesh and see if it melts. Copper wire scroungers do the same to burn off the plastic coating the wire. Just may work for you. The most you have to lose is time.
Good Luck
