Last Hunt on 2nd Fav Field...

[CRUSADER]

Only spent 4 hours (8 man hours) finishing the bottom section of the field where Shuan7 & I were going to hunt last week, until he ploughed & rolled the top section (which is now in Wheat). Lower section will be Barley soon. It was very dry & lumpy, which is why I left it to last, hoping he would roll it flat. Still did very well

Zoomorphic Belt Decor (Medieval)
2 Lead Cloth Seals
3.5 Lead Tokens
8 Roman Coins
A very Cool 17th C Buckle (new type for us)
3 Hammered to me & I ended with what I believe to be a late Georgian Gold plated Fob watch Winder, one of the best I have seen. Its only the Georgian bit I'm unsure of, but 80% confident.

We have spent a lot of time on the field this year & have had 38 hammered from it, in past years we might only get 4 or so

Thanks, its been an exceptional year. We keep topping previous years, but next year could never beat this one, unless I pull a hoard from the field.

Never a bad day only a disappointing one. With the XP, those hard days are few & far between. Even on Shaun7's land I pull a gem or too from my behind...

As a rookie, quick question - I notice you typically hunt in fields. Conceptually I always guessed that public gathering places were ideal spots. It probably seems silly but my question is: why is it there are artifacts/ coins in fields? If you were in the U.S., would you search in fields that have been farmed for 200+ years or elsewhere?

Its a common assumption by many that starting detecting (including those in the UK), that objects that were lose were likely to be near houses (or where houses once stood) or in areas where people walked or meet up. For the most part this is true but its only the tip of the iceburg.

Most of the objects I found were not lost by people wandering around in that particular field but dumped there in crap (literally ie. night soil). Since people had homes they have cleared out there rubbish (mixed with accidently loses) & dumped it on the fields they farm. Also they burnt many items on the fields like uniforms & furniture which hid other objects. Many other ways as well. Often a mile or so from any house but within walking/riding distance of the farm workers. Generally, the farmer workers lost very few items, as they were generally poor & were not crazy enough to carry around their valuables whilst doing heavy farm work. You will of course get various objects from the heavy horse which worked the land with them.

My point is that you want to look for the land that has been used to grow crops since the first settlers. In the US this means research, but if I were you I would be doing the old & still ploughed fields.

Incredible finds!
Don't clean out England! I still would like to detect there someday. Just leave a couple of flat buttons behind and I'll be happy with that.
