Let's See The 1500 and 1600s Coins Dug In The US

After seeing the post by button king of his 16th century Lizzie it really got me wondering. How many hunters in the states and Canada have found a 1500s coin? I have a good friend here in Maine that found a cut 16th century silver and he's found a Jeton as well(I know a Jeton isn't a coin.) so I wanted to see some of these. I figured I'd add in the 17th century coins cause I think it'd be a pretty small list if not....and I love seeing these early ones. So bring em on guys and gals. You've seen mine so I won't bore you with those again. Since they still haven't really gone away lol.
I wish I could change the title to include my Canadian brothers. Of course I want to see yours and apologize for the title

I was lucky to dig this rare Canadian 2 reale, 1661.

Lol that's amazing! Never seen the moose variety before. Gotta be quite rare indeed :-)

I've been fortunate to recover a few 1500s silver coins (all Lizzie sixpences), with the oldest being 1563. I've also dug 2 jettons from the 1580s plus a 1590s Dutch coin weight. And all these came from southeast Virginia. These may not seem like much to those hunting in the UK, but I know of very few who have found early coins like these here in the US. And I have no idea of my 1600s coin count, but I have quite a few including some of my cobs shown below, along with a dozen other hammered sixpences and shillings. And the last pic shows 149 colonial silvers I'd dug as of a couple years ago, and that count is now up to 175. If you zoom in you can see that a number of them are from the 1600s. And as most know, I lucked out back in Oct with digging an ultra-rare 1659 Lord Baltimore sixpence, also from Virginia, which is shown separately.

I'd also like to add that my digging buddy Dan recovered a 3rd or 4th century Roman coin in the water here in southeast Va. It appears it came from dumped ballast that likely was loaded onto a ship along the Thames before its departure for the New World. That's by far the oldest coin I've heard of being dug in this area.

BTW - I have a friend living in the southern US that has found many gold and silver coins, as well as other extremely rare Spanish artifacts including armor and pottery dating to as far back as the late 1300s. His collection is far better than just about any museum, and provides solid proof of Spanish occupation in this country more than 100 years before Columbus. Makes my stuff looks rinky-dink.

I've found quite a few 1600s cobs, a couple of king William coppers and two late 1600s Dutch coins. If I get motivated, I'll take some pictures. My goal this year was to find a hammered lizzy but I think you have to actually turn your detector on to do that [emoji15]

I suppose if your wife's name was Elizabeth and she drank too much you'd have your Hammered Lizzie. No T2 needed. Lol. Ok I know bro. I'm a HUGE idiot. I just can't help myself

I will come clean and state that most of my cobs don't have dates on them and that I'm assuming that at least some of them are 1600s. Don has never chimed in on my cob posts to date them for me and I've never made any effort myself :)

OK, I have some to add to this thread - 1661 King Leopold of Hungary. I have also dug a 1697 William III sixpence. I will also include this 2 reale cob, but it might be from the 1700s. These were all found in SW Pennsylvania.

Steve that top coin is 1757 or maybe 1753. I've found dozens of 1600s coins (many dateless & worn) but never a 2 reales cob. For whatever reason thats a tough find around here. Nice.

I posted it on the cob forum a while back and was told it could be 1750s. It's the only cob I have dug out of 60+ Spanish silvers.

Wow
keep em coming guys, fantastic finds. My oldest coin to date is a 1795 condor token, oldest silver is 1886 seated liberty dime. I would be thrilled to find some of these older silvers 8-)

Got this coin from a spill in Montreal two weeks ago (posted on Treasurenet and my main forum CMD)

1490 - Blanc Couronne Charles VIII
My oldest coin to date.

It's my only Canada dug 15th century one, found a few 17th century ones in the past but never a 16th.

I've been lucky... two 1500s, and several 1600s. BTW.. mine are dug just a little North of the U.S..

Beautiful coins but my favorite would be the Liard de France. For a copper it's in out of this world conservation state.
