Lorraine, you do such a beautiful job of cleaning everything you find, I hope you can help me clean an old coin I recently found. I know the coin is of no value, but I hope to clean it enough just to find out what it is.
I found this along with a 1965 quarter as shown in these pictures. I thought they where both quarters until I noticed the unidentified one was a little bit larger. My f2 detector gave the quarter a vdi of 79,(normal) but the toasted coin only came in at 62. I think it might be a copper coin, or maybe not a coin at all, but am curious to find out. Any instructions on how you would clean it would be greatly appreciated.
I wasn't sure if I should of posted this in cleaning, id, or beach forum, but I knew you would see it here. Hope to see you soon. bob

Hi Bob,

Thank you for your comments; unfortunately,I am not so proficient in cleaning older coins to advise you on this one, but I would suggest that you begin by soaking the coin in olive oil for a few days- a couple of weeks to slowly loosen & remove the surface particles .

After that I cannot advise you what following steps to take.:icon_scratch:

I'm certain that there are knowledgeable members on the forum who could advise you much better as to the cleaning of this interesting coin find.:icon_thumright:

Would love to see it "in person"; perhaps when we're hunting the same beach you could bring it with you and I can take a look at it.:hello:

Question: is there an outer rim of "X's" on the coin..and an inner circle?; kinda looks like that to me in the second photo, but I could be wrong.

Lorraine

thanks Lorraine, I'm going to soak in olive oil now. I didn't see x's, but did see an inner rim. Now that I see this in better light, I think it is some sort of commemorative token. I can barely see a head on the bad side, and alot of small writing on the other. P1000693.JPG P1000695.JPG

Yup, could be a token.... I think some were made of aluminum; some were made of brass

As the olive oil sinks in , you can gently rub the item and you should be able to get more "clues" as to its ID.

I love mystery finds; please post the progress of the olive oil soak

Thanks Bob,

Lorraine
