A week or so ago when I was at one of my favorite parks I found a wallet. Of corse I opened it to see if there was any identification. Drivers license, Social Security and over $500.00. It was a 19 year old that was from out of state. No phone number I could find. Yes I did the right thing. I turned it in to our local Police department.

Don't take it to the police dept. they usually don't ever send it to the person,a friend who's a cop told me the best thing to do is to try & find that person yourself,if it has an ID in it ,send it with a note to that address & it will probably get there.
