There was a point when I was doing 10 boxes of dimes a month and have went 5 months with getting at least one mercury dime, of course my average is 3 silver dimes per 4 boxes though.

I think it's just whatever former collections/hoards happen to get dumped by the clueless. Just random.

It is largely random, I find 1-3 Mercs a month unless I stumble on a collection dump.

My numbers for 2013
376 boxes searched
540 silver dimes
470 (87%) FDR
34 (6.3%) Merc
34 (6.3%) Canada
1 (<1%) Panama
1 (<1%) Barber
Of the 34 Mercs I found so far this year, 14 came from 3 boxes

But a Merc always brings a smile to my face!!!

I love finding mercs too. The first time I found more than one sliver in a box was when I found two mercs in one box. I was as excited as a kid on Christmas.

i have noticed a rise in mercs in my area. I have searched 8 boxes in the past 2 weeks and found 4 mercs and 11 fdrs. mercs were all in great condition.

Was there anything on the news about it?

A few years back, its just that some people dig up something and to them its new:
The Rise of Mercenary Armies: A Threat to Global Security | Global Research

I recall CBS aired a story on it.

as in merc dimes, they've been on the fall for me. Complete fall. I think some old guy in your area had a bunch saved up, someone dumped every single one, they funneled their way back to gaurda/ (not brinks for sure), and boom, it rains mercury (at least for you) You got my hopes up with the misleading title, because I'll say this right here right now, mercs are on the decline.
