I got this a short time back and kind of for got it but have been reading on here about the great buttons found back east and north so I thought I see what I found in the Texas Panhandle. It is about the size of a USA dime. Added back as well.

I think it's an old Navy button. Can you show a pic of the back too?

With the anchor and shells? Or are you saying they replicated older buttons for blazers?

I am not positive, but the iron back is what is causing me to lean toward civilian, and there is a very similiar blazer button that is commonly mis i.d.ed as Navy.I hope yours is a Navy though

Yes they do replicate Navy buttons for blazers. There was a post here where a guy found an entire jacket with these buttons. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,209855.0.html
We never could positively identify it because it resembles US Navy but I doubt they would use a button that would rust and fall of.

The area I found the button has been dated from early 1900s to mid 1920s (Glass, jars and other artifacts). I got quit a few 1890s coins in the same area. Oldest to date is a 1869 IHP.

Should I go on? :) (Lesner still sucks)

I know next to nothing about these buttons but,
I do recognise the point that I believe BigCy was making -that is, an iron back button wouldn't last in a saltwater environment.
With respect IP, the examples you have shown us were for land-based forces.

Well I don't think I'd base much on an assumption like that... but maybe that's just me.

Besides, I don't think the back is iron in the first place.

Well I'm not sure if you'll learn much because I'm just throwing out my thoughts like everyone else so far. I figured someone in the know for Civil War buttons would have answered by now. I do have an Alberts but not sure how far I'd get with this one.

PS... For the record I would guess Navy button, but again CW buttons are not my thing.

Re: Button Guys to the rescue! Date and ID please

Im posting the uniform here, with the buttons in question, in case any of you missed it. Maybe it will help ID this button.. If you notice, I said it was never positively IDed. Not to my satisfaction anyway. In the link, the tinned back subject was brought up and I found a tinned back "Navy looking" button and posted it here. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,209855.0.html

I dont know if it was ever proven that the US Navy used tinned back buttons. :dontknow: I hope this issue can be resolved by the forum. :icon_thumright: 8)

As far as the back being iron, it was an assumption. Put a magnet to the remaining back celtex.
