I went detecting a few days ago at a spot near where Fort Micanopy once stood. In 1836 there was a small battle with the Seminole Indians. Had the Equinox set up to find coins and really wasnt looking for relics because there is a lot of trash in this area. After about an hour search I had found several clad coins and an old skeleton key. Then I found a couple musket balls about 20 ft. Apart. Dont have a caliper but one is just over a 1/2" and weighs .48oz. Maybe from Hall Rifle? The other is over 5/8" and .8oz. I know you guys find these all the time up in the Northeast but its pretty exciting to find them here in Florida. Our population was minuscule in comparison at that time and would imagine there aren't many out there to find?
Thanks for looking.

Those are oldies alright!!!! Not sure about the Hall rifle, I think they were .54 cal but I could be wrong. Still awesome finds !!!!! I used to live in Starke Florida and my brother still lives in Newberry, only thing I ever found in Florida was arrow heads in the days before I metal detected.
Congrats!!

Musket balls came in all sizes. Lots of them were used by locals for hunting.

Hey Joe,
Funny you mentioned Newberry. I was out there yesterday after work and tried detecting at Newberry High School near old cemetery. A city work truck pulls up and I'm thinking I'm about to get run off. The guy asks me how I was doing and said hes getting a new detector and has a piece of property that had an 1800 s one room school house on it. Then asked if I wanted to detect it with him once he got his detector. Good folks in Newberry.

Yes. I guess you never know exactly when a musket ball was dropped/shot. The Seminole Indian story makes it sound a lot more exciting.:laughing7:

Yes sir, I’d like to think mine were all fired at redcoats but I’m sure it was deer, raccoon etc.

I melt all the conical bullets but I save the musket balls. We had a few militia camps that produce a ton this year

Very nice! We have a RV lot near Micanopy and every time I'm over there I wonder what secrets the ground holds. Love to see these finds!

I think that a musketball found at a random location is different than one found at a known site, such as yours. To me, it becomes more of a historical artifact rather than just another lead ball in the display case. So if you ask me I will say that you got some good history there....but it would be good to have supporting evidence like buttons and p-caps:thumbsup:

Is this a fired percussion cap? Found a couple of these also. I've thrown them away because I couldn't figure out what they were.
