I spent Sunday morning detecting along a sidewalk next to the road. I wasn't finding much other then a WHOLE SLEW of bottle caps. Gladly I've figured out with the Deus how to tell they're bottle caps so I wasn't digging them. Finally the nice lady who lived in the house next to the sidewalk came out with her dog and asked what I was looking for there. I told her I was hoping to find some old pennies or perhaps an old nickel. She volunteered to allow me to detect in her yard provided I didn't make a mess. I found a 1950 Roosevelt dime and a button which I believe is military. The house was built in 1900 so I am guessing WWI or WWII or even Korean War. I have no clue to be honest which is why I'm posting photos here. There are so many guys and gals on here brimming with knowledge it amazes me. So please let me know what you think. Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge. The back of the button is stamped Scoville Mfg Co Waterbury The button measures 7/8" in diameter.

That Scovill backmark dates it from 1850 to 1865, so it could very well be a Civil War era military button.

Civil War era would of course be nice, but I have to think WWI or WWII based on where it was found and the age of the home. Regardless it's the first military button I've ever found and am tickled.

It is a Great Seal button first used in 1902 and still in use. In WW I they were painted black.

Looking at it in the photos it would appear to have been black at one time. So that would make sense. Thank you.

WW1. I agree with the black finish even. Civil War buttons had a design like the picture below image-1642358651.jpg
