Hi all!
I had the chance to go out hunting again. Today, I ventured over to Woodland Avenue Park in Edison and a park in Westfield, and had a few interesting finds.
In terms of relics, I found an old oil lamp top and a couple pieces of a watch. Managed to find a handful of clad coins, but nothing to write home about. As always, a hunt would not be complete without a half dozen shotgun shells. Man, I find a lot of these.
I did find about 1/8th of a dollar bill. Can I turn this in for a new dollar, or at least 12.5 cents? ha ha!
At Woodland Ave, I came upon a spot that had several signals. I believe that it's musket shot, perhaps from the Battle of Short Hills. Would love an expert's opinion. I posted a picture with a penny for size reference.
I found a couple odds and ends. A button that says impermeable...twice, just in case I missed it the first time. I found a copper tag for the Teachers Protective Union (TPU....*chuckle*). On the back it says that I can turn it in for a reward. Hot dog! I wonder if they will give me something?
Found a Sampson's brass plug. I wasn't sure what this was when I dug it. Was hoping that it was an old copper. Oh well.
I did manage to find a 1910 V nickel. Pretty cool. Very happy to have saved this little fella.
I dug two wheat pennies....Couldn't get a date on either yet. They will need more cleaning.....
Then I found a very strange item, and I need your help. I believe that it's a very old, very thin, silver coin. It's hard for me to tell what it is because there are no markings that I can discern on it....but the surface looks exactly like my old, worn half-reale. This item is 15 cm in diameter, and rings up at 12:29on my CTX 3030. Not typically where I'd expect silver....but it came out of the ground like a silver coin....all bright and shiny. It has a high ring to it when I drop on the counter. Anyone have any ideas? I'm a newbie when it comes to old coins, so I'd love you help! I posted close up pics of the front and the back to help. I also included this in a pic with the nickel and wheaties for size reference.
Thanks!
Kevin
