Hi all!

I had the chance to go out hunting again. Today, I ventured over to Woodland Avenue Park in Edison and a park in Westfield, and had a few interesting finds.

In terms of relics, I found an old oil lamp top and a couple pieces of a watch. Managed to find a handful of clad coins, but nothing to write home about. As always, a hunt would not be complete without a half dozen shotgun shells. Man, I find a lot of these.

I did find about 1/8th of a dollar bill. Can I turn this in for a new dollar, or at least 12.5 cents? ha ha!

At Woodland Ave, I came upon a spot that had several signals. I believe that it's musket shot, perhaps from the Battle of Short Hills. Would love an expert's opinion. I posted a picture with a penny for size reference.

I found a couple odds and ends. A button that says impermeable...twice, just in case I missed it the first time. I found a copper tag for the Teachers Protective Union (TPU....*chuckle*). On the back it says that I can turn it in for a reward. Hot dog! I wonder if they will give me something?

Found a Sampson's brass plug. I wasn't sure what this was when I dug it. Was hoping that it was an old copper. Oh well. :)

I did manage to find a 1910 V nickel. Pretty cool. Very happy to have saved this little fella.

I dug two wheat pennies....Couldn't get a date on either yet. They will need more cleaning.....

Then I found a very strange item, and I need your help. I believe that it's a very old, very thin, silver coin. It's hard for me to tell what it is because there are no markings that I can discern on it....but the surface looks exactly like my old, worn half-reale. This item is 15 cm in diameter, and rings up at 12:29on my CTX 3030. Not typically where I'd expect silver....but it came out of the ground like a silver coin....all bright and shiny. It has a high ring to it when I drop on the counter. Anyone have any ideas? I'm a newbie when it comes to old coins, so I'd love you help! I posted close up pics of the front and the back to help. I also included this in a pic with the nickel and wheaties for size reference.

Thanks!

Kevin

Get the diameter, thickness and weight of the coin and I bet some experts will chime in. Congrats on the finds. I have hunted south mountain without much luck. I always have had a feeling that there are some big finds to be had there. I have two promising spots that may produce. Let me know if you're interested in joining up. I also have a CTX.

Thanks Scrappy!

The diameter of this item is 15 cm. I've attached a pic of the coin, a Rosie, a Merc, and my 1/2 Reale for comparison.

I also have attached a pic of the thickness. As you can see, the item is paper thin, similar to the thickness of the 1/2. Looking at the site, the best I can come up with if 1/4 reale or a pistareen maybe?

I'd love to meet up sometime! Let's definitely do that. :)

Possibly a worn Capped Bust or Liberty Seated Half Dime? They are 15.5 mm in diameter. Nice hunt! :icon_thumright:

I would agree about the 1/2 dime. I have an 1854 half dime that looks damn close to the size of that coin. If we meet up to hunt I have calipers to get exact measurements if you want. Some coins will always be a mystery however. I gotta few of those!
