Yesterday, I went back to where I found the 1793 Half Cent on Tuesday and about 10 feet from where I found it, I found this 1869 Shield Nickel. It was a awesome way to end 2014 and good way to start 2015.

Here are some flat buttons I found in the same area.

That nickel was a high grade coin until it was dropped. Still a great find. They just corrode so easily

It's very unfortunate that we will never find a shiny shield nickel in the dirt. Great find. I remember my first one, two in the same day. Not more than a few feet from each other.

The only ones i've pulled out of the ground that look decent are war nickels.

good show!
Yours, you can make out the date of (1869?) - at least you can see most of the details, my only, is almost blank, 'cept for the "5"

Those shield nickels are a tough find ! I actually found an 1868 shield in a floor tear out in an old brick building that used to house
railroad workers in Santa Fe . Mine had some stubborn crust on it - I set in a dish and poured Worcestershire sauce over it for a
few hours - cleaned it up nicely ! I don't recommend this to anybody because it is acidic and will wreck the value to a collector,
but for rather toasty common date , common type coins it's probably alright .

That looks like it has a lot of detail under the crud but it's hard to tell what you would have left if you cleaned it.

Big congrats on your first Shield! I remember my first one, it was an accidental find! I was chasing a wheaty signal in the hole, after recovering it, I re-scanned the hole and heard a gold/foil/nickel tone I didn't hear originally and about three inches deeper I pulled my first Shield Nickel. It's in fair condition although I can't get a definitive date 188? On 1-4-15 I found my 2nd one at a new field site, it is an 1866 with rays! I used an sos pad to clean it. they are pretty tough and can take a good scrubbing, but if you decide to use this method try it on another junk nickel first and determine if you like the result.
Here's hoping you find many more!!
