Muddy Maverick Site "dishes" out some goodies...

...and a two pound "whatsit".

Chris (mave2535) and I got out to our Maverick site for about three hours this morning, and after the 3 inches of rain we had last night, mud was the order of the day (with a side of slop ;D). I'm going to attempt to keep this fairly short and just let the pictures do the talking. Headed up to the high spot where we believe the original homesite was and immediately started getting some decent signals. Chris was the first to score with a beautiful flat button - the back reads: London/Double Gilt - any help (age) with this will be greatly appreciated. I hit next with a very odd coin (see pics) - thought it was anther colonial copper but I swear it says Venezuela on the obverse (?!) - no date and the back is toast (anyone got an i.d.?). Dug a bunch of horseshoe nails (tacks?) and was pleasantly surprised to pick two pieces of what looks to be an old plate of some sort (can't remember what this type is called :icon_scratch:). My last hit (almost knocked me down) was this giant bar of what I think is iron - it weighs nearly two pounds, six inches long, 2 inches wide and about 1 and 1/4 inches high (?!). One end looks like its been hammered or very roughly cut. No clue as to what the he** it is (any ideas?). Before we left, we decided to hit the other side of the road where all the old buildings and well sits. I'm glad we did! About ten feet from the well I got a solid dime signal and lo-and-behold, I dug this pretty little 1916 S Barber dime (our first trip out here I pulled a 1907 Barber quarter about five feet away from this). It was a great way to end the day's hunt - tomorrow we'll be heading out again in hopes of pulling some more goodies from the "colonial side"... :icon_thumright:

By the way, if anyone remembers the little joke that Modern Miner and I played on Chris (see the video - http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,202220.0.html) - today Chris dished out a big "payback" on me. After pulling that sweet button, I went back to swingin' when he starts flipping out and calling me back over to see "what else is in the hole". He was white as a ghost and I thought WTF(?!) - I look down into his plug and there was this giant piece of silver staring back at me!!! You could just make out that it was a big ol' honkin' Morgan :o - I was about to hit him with my shovel and jump his claim :D then he busted out laughing and kindly reminded me that payback is a ..... :-* ;D

Anyway, enjoy the many pics and thanks for stopping by. Stay classy T'net and keep on swingin'... :happy3:

Looks to be an old button. Will it clean up? Nice digs

Thanks CJ - Chris actually dug the button - the back reads: LONDON - DOUBLE GILT. The front is plain (if there was anything on it, it's long gone now. I do wish that someone could give us a possible date on it though...

Thanks TimC - it was definitely worth gettin' muddy... :D

Thanks KD - hopefully there will be some more silver surprises to come up here...

DDD,

I think you've got the site of one of the Old houses on the property with that flat button and broken china coming up on that hill.

Keep up the good work--I'm very happy it's paying off for you now. And once you pound that one to death, there will be another house site or two, plus at least two barns on that property. :)

Best Wishes,

Buckles

Many thanks to you Buck - I'm sure you know that I was more excited about the two pieces of broken china and that flat button than anything else we dug yesterday... :happy3:

Keep at it, DDD. If you're seeing the signs of habitation in a field--but more importantly HEARING the iron there--then you're in the right spot, and you have to trust it, and keep at that same general area for a while...until you get a sense of What was there.

I wish I had a sawbuck for the number of times I doubted that I'd found the spot, even though I heard a bit of iron and saw china, pottery, and brick bits ever twenty feet or so. Sometimes I walked out of the site to try to find the site in other areas where it Wasn't, then wandered back to my original hunch and started to make finds. So the moral of the story is: Even if the finds are thin there, if all the signs point to it--then it was there.

:)

Best Wishes,

Buckles

Andy,
Back from my trip up north. I drove through your area last night. I had a flashlight, but no detector. :( You're lucky, because I would have been out in your hot spot doing some frozen night hunting. ;D
Congrats to you and Chris. Looks like you're getting the spot you were hoping for. Way to go.
I'll try to find that back mark in one of my button books, but chance are early to mid 1800's. Great find Chris.
I'm hoping someone can ID that coin to get an idea on it's age. Maybe post it in a coin forum? The Barber is a sweet find for sure.
As Buckles taught me, save those pieces of pottery & glass shards, they will look great with your relic displays.
Great going guys. :icon_king:

You know your always welcome here - heck, I'll even break out some more jerky for ya'... :D

I don't know if I'd hunt that site at night though (at least not without a sidearm). Chris and I were in the little general store and saw the pics of this black coyote that some hunter shot not to far from our site. Biggest darn coyote I've ever seen...

Chris,
To this day I still love finding old buttons. I have 100's now mostly ID'd and displayed. It sure beats shotgun shell heads. ;D
Keep an eye on that Andy character, he may want to barter jerky for buttons.
Hopefully I'll see you guys soon.
