Re: Mushroom hunting with the family. Found "61"! Mushroom Cache!

Morels reproduce via "spores". The best way to insure a future crop is to carry the shrooms out of the field in an onion sack, thus, spreading the spores.
Some people wait when finding the small morels thinking they will grow larger. They actually reach their full size in one night.

Nice pile of mushrooms! I haven't found any yet but hopefully after this rain we're getting they will start popping up.

I hear those morels sell for around 65.00 a pound... don't know where ya would sell them tho....

The "Yellow Brick Bank Restaraunt" in Shepherdstown buys them for $250.00 a lb.
Thanks mike I know where to take them now if I ever find any... lol

When I was a lil guy we always went out in numbers to find more, Dad my 2 older brothers and I. When they were fried up we ate like vultures, But when the plate was gettin empty it was every man for himself. Dang near cause fist fights over who got the last mushroom. still none here.... :tongue3:

OK, OK, I will be the one to ask the question: What were the settings on your machine when you found
the first one? Was any of it masked by iron in the ground? Any silver? :laughing7:
Nice bunch of mushrooms that you have there. My Dad took me and brother hunting for those on my grandfather's place
about 55 years ago. Pleasant memories, and still taste them.
If you want to sell them, call Smith's Forest Products, Portland, Oregon......that's my brother, and he deals exclusively
in products found in the wild.......berries, mushrooms....all kinds. (Hope this doesn't violate any rules.) Can't promise he
will buy, but a call never hurt.
There is a morel-lookalike here in S. Korea. And it is edible. Many other types, some edible, some the Koreans make medicine
out of, and some that will send a person to an early grave. When hiking, I have become able to tell a few of the good ones.
So, I pick them, and leave the rest alone.
Those kids won't forget these kinds of hunts......that is what treasure is made of.

Great find!
I love mushrooms.....but am too scared to pick any around here.
Even haven read several books and web pages on "safe" morels, I am queasy about picking and eating them.
Herbs, wild onion, flowers, bulbs, etc. any day....mushrooms...leave it to the "experts".

You either have a fabulous meal, or, if you dry them, and even more flavorful garnish for soup, gravy, you name it. So far, I've picked about a dozen this year; I'd love to find a cache like that again!

Has anyone ever tried to raise them commercially? Looks like it would be worth just about any expense to harvest a good crop. Monty

Whoa they look nothing like any mushroom I have ever picked, these are like what I use to pick in Australia.

Re: Mushroom hunting with the family. Found "61"! Mushroom Cache!

Way to go on a great cahce. Last year I had about 25lbs by now. A little dry here, and they're growing one heree one there. Only got about 8 lbs this year so far. Hopefully this rain will make 'em start popping out more. Definately a slower year than the previous ones have been. :notworthy:
